DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS PROBABLY AUTHORED BY GEORGE WOOLWORTH COLTON AND FIRST APPEARED IN COLTON'S ATLAS OF THE WORLD IN 1855. IT CONTINUED TO APPEAR IN LATER EDITIONS OF COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS, PUBLISHED BY J.H. COLTON & CO. AND SUCCESSOR COMPANIES, WITH RELATIVELY LITTLE CHANGE ON THE MAP OTHER THAN FOR THE TITLE, IMPRINT, PLATE NUMBER AND BORDER. THIS SAME MAP IN 1875 WAS IN GRAY'S ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES, PHILADELPHIA: O.W. GRAY, AND IN LATER EDITIONS OF THIS WORK. THIS MAP WAS THE 1875 ISSUE REFERRED TO. IT WAS EXTENSIVELY REVISED TO REFLECT MAJOR PARKS, CHANGED RAILROAD ROUTES, ADDED STREET NAMES, ETC. THE DIFFERENT DISTRICTS ARE SHOWN SEPARATELY COLORED.

J. H. COLTON & CO. WAS, ACCORDING TO RISTOW, PROBABLY FOUNDED BY JOSEPH HUTCHINS COLTON IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1831. THE EARLIEST IMPRINTS OF THE FIRM ARE DATED 1833. COLTON WAS BORN IN 1800 IN LONGMEADOW, MASS. HE HAD LITTLE FORMAL EDUCATION OR TRAINING IN GEOGRAPHY OR CARTOGRAPHY AND HIS PRINCIPAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE SUCCESS OF THE FIRM WAS IN ADMINISTRATION, MANAGEMENT AND DISTRIBUTION. FOR THE FIRST 10 OR 15 YEARS OF OPERATION, COLTON PURCHASED COPYRIGHTS OF MAPS PREPARED BY OTHERS. IN 1855, THE FIRST VOLUME OF COLTON'S ATLAS OF THE WORLD ILLUSTRATING PHYSICAL AND RAILROAD GEOGRAPHY... WAS RELEASED. SINCE THERE WERE NO PLATE MARKS, THE ENGRAVED MAPS WERE PROBABLY TRANSFERRED TO LITHOGRAPHIC STONES. COLOR WAS MANUALLY APPLIED. VOLUME 2 WAS PUBLISHED IN 1856, COVERING EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA, OCEANIA, ETC. THE ATLAS OF THE WORLD WAS DISCONTINUED AFTER TWO EDITIONS, POSSIBLY BECAUSE OF ITS HIGH PRICE, AND WAS REPLACED IN 1857 BY COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS IN ONE VOLUME, WITH THE MAPS DONE ON STEEL PLATES. MOST OF THE MAPS IN THE GENERAL ATLAS DUPLICATE THOSE IN THE EARLIER ATLAS OF THE WORLD, BUT DO NOT HAVE DECORATIVE BORDERS IN ORDER TO REDUCE THEIR SIZE, UNTIL THE 1860 EDITION. NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT GRAY. HIS EARLIEST RECORDED ATLAS WAS IN 1869. HE WAS FROM DANIELSONVILLE, CONNECTICUT WHERE HE WAS A CIVIL ENGINEER AND TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEYOR.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES.
