SCALE IN STATUTE MILES (CENTER, BOTTOM MARGIN). TABLE OF ABBREVIATIONS, SYMBOLS AND LINES (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). ENGRAVED DATA EXTENDS THROUGH THE NEAT LINES ON THE LEFT, TOP AND RIGHT MARGINS. THE SKETCH IS WIDER BETWEEN THE NEAT LINES AT THE BOTTOM THAN AT THE TOP (57.8 CM. AT TOP AND 59 CM. AT BOTTOM). THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
DURING 1873, FOUR PARTIES WERE ENGAGED IN THE WORK IN THIS SECTION. TRIANGULATION WORK INSIDE THE ENTRANCE TO CHESAPEAKE BAY CONTINUED. A SHORE-LINE SURVEY WAS MADE OF THE ELIZABETH RIVER AND ITS PRINCIPAL BRANCHES. ADDITIONAL HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED BY THE PARTY UNDER MASTER ROBERT PLATT, U.S.N. ON THE STEAMER BIBB. THE DETAILED SURVEY OF THE JAMES RIVER WAS RESUMED AND BOTH TOPOGRAPHICAL AND HYDROGRAPHICAL DATA WAS COLLECTED. THAT CHORE WAS THEN COMPLETED SOME 35 MILES ABOVE NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA.
ADDITIONS WERE MADE DURING THE YEAR IN GENERAL COAST CHART NO. IV, CAPE MAY TO CAPE HENRY AND IN COAST CHART NO. 32, CHESAPEAKE BAY, YORK RIVER TO POCOMOKE SOUND, VIRGINIA. 1872 EDITION PLATES WERE ENGRAVED FOR CHARTS 31 THROUGH 36, COVERING THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. ENGRAVING WAS CONTINUED ON CHARTS NO. 29 AND 30, COVERING CHINCOTEAGUE INLET TO HOG ISLAND AND FROM HOG ISLAND TO CAPE HENRY.
DATA IS FROM THE USCS 1873 ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING THROUGHOUT THE MAP, BUT OTHERWISE IN GOOD CONDITION. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF J017-DDT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-287. IT HAS A SECOND COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH BROWNING THROUGHOUT THE SKETCH AND WITH SOME SEPARATION IN THE FOLDS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DL AND A MdHR # OF MSA SC1399-644.
