J. M. ATWOOD DREW AND ENGRAVED THE MAP. ACCORDNG TO PHILLIPS ATLASES (SEE # 301 AND 302), THIS MAP IS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE CONTAINED IN THE 1865 EDITION OF THIS WORK BY THE SAME PUBLISHER (SEE MAP # 365A5). RISTOW INDICATES THAT THE MITCHELL NEW SCHOOL ATLAS WAS PUBLISHED FROM 1839 TO 1886, ALTHOUGH WRITER HAS NOT FOUND REFERENCES TO THE PRE 1865 EDITIONS AND DOES NOT KNOW IF THE MAP WAS INCLUDED PRIOR TO THAT YEAR. SEVERAL EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS WERE PUBLISHED BY E.H. BUTLER & CO. OF PHILADELPHIA.
THERE WAS ALSO A SEPARATE INDEX COVERING 17000 NAMES FROM MITCHELL'S NEW SCHOOL ATLAS, PUBLISHED BY H.D. GREGORY IN PHILADELPHIA IN 1871. (SEE PHILLIPS # 287).
KARPINSKI NOTES THAT DOUBTLESS THE TWO AUTHORS WHOSE SCHOOL ATLASES AND GEOGRAPHIES ENJOYED THE LARGEST CONTINUED USE AND THE WIDEST CIRCULATION WERE S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL AND JAMES MONTEITH. THE SCHOOL ATLAS OR GEOGRAPHY WAS THE ONE BOOK ALMOST CERTAIN TO BE FOUND IN EVERY HOME WITH SCHOOL AGE CHILDRED AND MANY OF THE BOOKS WERE CONSLTED IN THE WESTWARD MIGRATION.
DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES, KARPINSKI AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : PHILLIPS NOTES THAT THIS IS THE SAME MAP AS WAS IN THE 1865 EDITION OF THE SCHOOL ATLAS. MANY OTHER ATLAS EDITIONS BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THIS ONE EXIST, SO THERE MAY BE SOME MAP CHANGES.
