DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE THIRD EDITION OF THIS CHART, FIRST PUBLISHED IN PRELIMINARY FORM IN 1856. IT WAS DONE OVER IN 1870 BECAUSE OF THE RESURVEY OF THE CHANNELS IN 1869 AND 1870. THIS IS A DETAILED, LARGE SCALE CHART COVERING THE PATAPSCO RIVER WEST TO BALTIMORE AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY ACROSS TO THE EASTERN SHORE. IT EXTENDS FROM FAIRLEE CREEK IN THE NORTH TO THE MAGOTHY RIVER IN THE SOUTH. HUNTINGFIELD FARM IS SHOWN IN DETAIL. SOUNDINGS ARE IN FEET AND BOTTOM CONDITIONS ARE NOTED. THE 6', 12', AND 18' SOUNDINGS ARE SHOWN IN VARIOUS SHADES OF DOTS TO INDICATE SHOALS. NAVIGATIONAL COURSES ARE SHOWN INTO THE RIVER. THE TOPOGRAPHY IS EXTENSIVELY DRAWN.

THE SECOND EDITION, DONE IN 1859, WAS REPUBLISHED BECAUSE A NEW CHANNEL WAS BEING EXCAVATED IN THE PATAPSCO. THE SAILING DIRECTIONS WERE REVISED, INFORMATION ON THE NEW CHANNEL APPENDED, THE VIEWS (NOT LABELED IN THE FIRST EDITION) WERE LABELED. THE TOPOGRAPHY WAS COMPLETED, AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WAS ADDED. LATER EDITIONS WERE PUBLISHED IN 1877 AND 1880. IN THE FIFTH EDITION IN 1880, THE CHART TITLE WAS ALTERED TO "PATAPSCO RIVER & BALTIMORE HARBOR". FIVE EDITIONS OF A NEW CHART 384 NOW ENTITLED "BALTIMORE HARBOR & APPROACHES" WERE PUBLISHED FROM 1892 THROUGH 1899 ON A SCALE OF 1/40,000. IN APRIL, 1900, THIS CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART 549 ENTITLED "APPROACHES TO BALTIMORE HARBOR", ALSO ON A SCALE OF 1/40,000. THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 549 SHOWS 60 RELEASES OF THE CHART FROM 1900 THROUGH 1990. THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED IN APRIL, 1974 TO 12278, WHEN THE NOAA NUMBERING SYSTEM WAS CHANGED. THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM WAS ADDED WITH EDITION 60 OF OCTOBER 20, 1990.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHARTS 384, 549 AND 12278, FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 384 SHOWS FIVE DIFFERENT PLATES WERE USED FROM 1849 THROUGH THE NOVEMBER, 1880 EDITION. WHILE THE DATE OF THE FIRST, OR PRELIMINARY EDITION IS GIVEN AS 1849, THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE FIRST ACTUAL PUBLICATION WAS IN 1856. THE FIFTH EDITION INVOLVED A NAME CHANGE TO "PATAPSCO RIVER & BALTIMORE HARBOR". FROM MARCH, 1892 THROUGH FEBRUARY, 1899, THERE WERE FIVE MORE RELEASES OF CHART 384 UNDER THE NAME "BALTIMORE HARBOR & APPROACHES". THE SCALE WAS ENLARGED TO 1/40,000. CHART 384 WAS SU[PERCEDED BY NUMBER 549 ENTITLED "APPROACHES TO BALTIMORE HARBOR" ON A SCALE OF 1/40,000. FREQUENT EDITIONS AND PRINTS WERE SUBSEQUENTLY RELEASED. THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD SHOWS 60 FROM 1900 THROUGH 1990. IN 1974, NOAA CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM AND THE CHART NUMBER BECAME 12278.

THE THREE SHORELINE VIEWS ARE UNTITLED. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE CENTER RIGHT, WHERE THE USCS SEAL ETC. IS LOCATED IN THE 2ND EDITION. THERE IS NO DATA ON THE NEW PATAPSCO RIVER CHANNEL EXCAVATION BEING UNDERTAKEN WHEN THE 2ND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED. THE COMPASS ROSE IS ON TOP OF THE NAVIGATION COURSE ENTERING THE PATAPSCO. SEE MAP # 356U5.

ED. 2 - (1859) - THE NEW CHANNEL IN BALTIMORE HARBOR IS SHOWN BY DOTTED LINES. RANGE LIGHTS ARE ADDED. MARGINAL CHANGES ARE MADE. THE TOPOGRAPHY IS COMPLETED. THE COMPASS ROSE IS MOVED FURTHER EAST. IT IS ELECTROTYPE COPY # 5 ON PLATE 787. SEE MAP # 359U5.

THE NOTE UNDER THE TITLE INDICATES THAT THE PATAPSCO CHANNELS WERE RESURVEYED IN 1869 AND 1870. THIS EDITION WAS ON PLATE # 1134. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.
