DESCRIPTION : THIS U.S. COAST SURVEY CHART IS STATE 2 OF EDITION 1 OF A NAVIGATIONAL CHART OF THE AREA FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE POTOMAC RIVER TO PINEY POINT. SOUNDINGS IN FEET ARE COMPLETE. THE TOPOGRAPHY NOW LOOKS COMPLETE NORTHWEST FROM HULL'S CREEK ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE POTOMAC RIVER. SOME OF THAT SHORELINE WAS DOTTED IN THE EARLIER STATE, WHICH WAS PRELIMINARY. THE 1868 VERSION WAS INCLUDED AS SKETCH 10 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1868. THE POTOMAC RIVER WAS CHARTED IN FOUR SHEETS, OF WHICH THIS IS SHEET NO. 1.

THE 1863 ANNUAL REPORT INDICATES THAT THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE EARLIER 1862 VERSION OF THE CHART WAS DONE PRIMARILY BY LIEUT. COMDG. T.S. PHELPS IN THE STEAMER CORWIN. REGARDING THE BOTTOMS, PHELPS REPORTED THAT THE LUMPS ON THE BOTTOMS BETWEEN LOWER CEDAR POINT AND COB POINT ARE ABRUPT AND MOSTLY CONE SHAPED AND COMPOSED PRINCIPALLY OF OYSTERS AND SAND. TEN FEET WAS THE LEAST WATER FOUND ON THEM. HE REPORTED FURTHER THAT "THE SOUTHERN BANK OF THE POTOMAC WAS TRAVERSED BY BANDS OF REBEL SOLDIERS WHILE THE PARTY IN THE CORWIN WAS PROSECUTING THE HYDROGRAPHY, BUT, THOUGH OFTEN WITHIN GUNSHOT, THE BOAT PARTIES WERE IN NO INSTANCE MOLESTED. THESE BANDS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE CONCERNED IN RECEIVING AND AIDING THE CONTRABAND TRAFFIC ACROSS THE RIVER." THE BANDS UNDOUBTEDLY ACCOUNT FOR THE INCOMPLETE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SOUTHERN SHORE IN THE 1862 PRELIMINARY EDITION AND STATE. THE 1868 ANNUAL REPORT INDICATES THAT SUB-ASSISTANT J.W. DONN LED A PARTY THAT COMPLETED THE TOPOGRAPHY FROM PINEY POINT TO COB POINT ON THE MARYLAND SIDE AND FROM MATTOX CREEK TO LOWER MACHODOC RIVER ON THE VIRGINIA SIDE.

A SECOND COMPLETED STATE EDITION OF THIS SHEET OF THE FOUR SHEET SURVEY OF THE POTOMAC RIVER WAS ISSUED BY THE U.S.C.& G.S IN 1877.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS OF 1862, 1864 AND 1868 AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 388 INDICATES THAT THERE WERE THREE EDITIONS OF THIS CHART BEFORE IT WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART NUMBER 557.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1862) - THIS IS THE PRELIMINARY CHART. ITS TOPOGRAPHY WAS NOT COMPLETE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE RIVER. IT WAS RELEASED ON HEAVY PAPER AS WELL AS ON THIN PAPER IN THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE USCS TO CONGRESS FOR 1862. THE 1877 EDITION INDICATES IN THE TITLE DATA THAT THE FIRST PUBLICATION WAS IN 1863, SO IT MAY HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED AFTER THE DATE IN ITS TITLE. SEE MAP # 362U7.

- STATE 2 - (1868) - THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD SHOWS THIS AS PLATE # 929. THE DATE IS INDICATED ON THE CHART. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ED. 2 - (1877- 1907) - THIS EDITION IS DATED OCTOBER, 1877 IN THE TITLE DATA BUT SHOWS TOPOGRAPHY REVISIONS IN 1904 IN THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION. IT WAS ON PLATE # 1135. SEE MAP # 404U5.

ED. 3 - (1907- ) - THIS WAS ON PLATE 3005. A COPY HAS NOT YET BEEN SEEN.

CHART # 557 ENTITLED "ENTRANCE TO PINEY POINT" OF SEPTEMBER, 1908 ON A SCALE OF 1:40,000 SUPERSEDED CHART # 388. THE NORTH AMERICAN DATUM OF 1927 WAS ADDED WITH EDITION 5 OF APRIL 7, 1943. THE CHART WAS SWITCHED TO THE MERCATOR PROJECTION WITH EDITION 6 OF AUGUST 10, 1946. THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED IN THE 19TH EDITION OF NOVEMBER 9, 1974 TO 12233. EDITION 30 OF JUNE 30, 1990 WAS CONVERTED TO THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHARTS 388 AND FOR 12233.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS 5 COPIES OF THIS SHEET, THREE OF ED. 1, STATE 1 ONE OF ED. 1, STATE 2 AND ONE OF ED. 2. ONE COPY OF THE 1862 STATE IS ON HEAVY PAPER AND IS BACKED BY CONTEMPORARY LINEN. THE COLLECTION'S COPY HAS THE NUMBER "69" PASTED ON THE CHART IN THE TOP RIGHT AND BOTTOM LEFT CORNERS ON BOTH THE FRONT AND BACK. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-HEL AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-614. THE COLLECTION HAS TWO COPIES OF THE 1862 STATE ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. THE ACQ. # ON THE FIRST IS C015-2U1 AND THE MDHR # IS MSA SC1399-571. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NOAA010- GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-932. THE HUNTINGFIELD COPY OF THE 1877 PLATE IS IN BLUISH-GREEN INK ON HEAVY PAPER. IT APPARENTLY WAS A STRIKE DONE AROUND 1970 FROM THE ORIGINAL PLATE UPDATED IN 1904. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NOAA012-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399- 684. FOR DATA ON SHEETS 2-4, SEE MAPS # 362UA, 363U7, AND 364U4.
