DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED AS SKETCH NO. 8 TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY, SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1868. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS BY DOTTED LINES THE AERIAL EXTENT OF MORE DETAILED SHEETS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT AND NEVER PUBLISHED OR ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC, TOGETHER WITH THEIR NUMBERS AND DATES OF EXECUTION. ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC, TIDAL AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE ARE NOTED.

DURING 1868, WORK WAS CONDUCTED TO CONNECT THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION SOUTH OF CHESAPEAKE BAY WITH THE PRIMARY STATIONS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., KENT ISLAND, AND THE AREA NORTHEAST TO THE BAY OF FUNDY. A PARTY WAS ACTIVE FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR IN MAPPING AND SOUNDING THE PRINCIPAL ESTUARIES OF THE CHESAPEAKE. PLANE-TABLE WORK CONTINUED ON YEOCOMICO RIVER. HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYS WERE COMPLETED OF THE YEOCOMICO AND COANE RIVERS, VIRGINIA; THE ST. GEORGE'S AND WICOMICO RIVERS, MARYLAND; CURRIOMAN AND NOMINI BAYS, VIRGINIA, WITH MATTOX AND NOMINI CREEKS, AND THE HEAD OF LOWER MACHODOC RIVER. TOPOGRAPHY WAS COMPLETED OF BRITTON'S BAY AND ST. CLEMENT'S BAY, AND THE SHORES OF THE POTOMAC FROM PINEY POINT TO COB POINT, ON THE MARYLAND SIDE, AND FROM MATTOX CREEK TO LOWER MACHODOC RIVER, ON THE VIRGINIA SIDE. ADDITIONS WERE MADE TO THE SURVEY OF THE RIVER BETWEEN RAGGED POINT AND SMITH'S POINT. WORK RESUMED ON THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE BRANCHES OF MOBJACK BAY. THE SHORES WERE SURVEYED AND THE CHANNELS WERE SOUNDED OF THE EAST, NORTH, WARE AND SEVERN RIVERS. ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE CHESAPEAKE, A NUMBER OF THE ESTUARIES, PASSED BY WHEN THE GENERAL HYDROGRAPHY OF THE BAY WAS EXECUTED, WERE SOUNDED, SUCH AS HUNGER CREEK, THE NASAWADDOX, THE NANDUA, THE CRADDOCK AND THE OCCOHANNOCK. LATER IN THE YEAR, SOUNDINGS WERE COMPLETED IN BACK RIVER AND IN POQUOSIN RIVER.

BOWLER'S ROCK AND CORNER ROCK IN THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER WERE CAREFULLY EXAMINED AND SKETCHED FOR PURPOSES OF POSSIBLE LIGHT HOUSES. A SURVEY OF THE WRECK OF THE IRON-CLAD REBEL STEAMER MERRIMAC IN THE ELIZABETH RIVER WAS MADE TO DETERMINE ITS PARTIAL REMOVAL TO PERMIT SAFE NAVIGATION IN THE CHANNEL. FINALLY, TIDAL OBSERVATIONS WERE CONTINUED AT OLD POINT COMFORT, VIRGINIA.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. THERE IS A TEAR ALONG THE LOWER LEFT FOLD, WITH MINOR LOSS OF DATA. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-586.
