THE DEALER DATED THIS MAP AS C1870. WE BELIEVE IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE 1867 EDITION OF BLACK'S GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD, NEW EDITION, fol., EDINBURGH, A. & C. BLACK, 1867. PHILLIPS LISTS THE MAP AND IT HAS THE CORRECT MAP # (43A). IT IS UNLIKELY TO HAVE BEEN AS LATE AS 1870 BECAUSE IT DOES NOT SHOW THE FEB. 18, 1867 CHANGE IN THE COUNTY SEAT OF HOWARD COUNTY FROM ELLICOTT MILLS TO ELLICOTT CITY, NOR THE OCT. 5, 1867 CREATION OF WICOMOCO COUNTY, WHICH WAS CREATED FROM SOMERSET AND WORCESTER COUNTIES. GARRETT COUNTY, WHICH WAS CREATED FROM ALLEGHANY COUNTY ON DEC. 4, 1872 IS NOT SHOWN.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS A NUMBER OF EDITIONS OF BLACK'S GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD DATED FROM 1840 TO 1898. THE EDITIONS THROUGH 1858 WERE DONE BY S. HALL AND DO NOT LIST THE MAP AS BEING INCLUDED, NOR DOES THE BARTHOLOMEW EDITION OF 1860. THE 1867 ISSUE (PHILLIPS # 849) SHOWS THE MAP BY NAME AND THE CORRECT MAP NUMBER. THE 1870 ENTRY (PHILLIPS # 6172) DOES NOT HAVE A LISTING OF THE MAPS. THE 1890 ISSUE (PHILLIPS # 4368) DOES NOT CONTAIN BARTHOLOMEW'S NAME, ALTHOUGH IT WAS PUBLISHED IN EDINBURGH. THE 1898 ISSUE (PHILLIPS # 1021) WAS PUBLISHED IN LONDON, WHICH THE MAP WASN'T. WE BELIEVE, FOR REASONS NOTED IN THE DESCRIPTION, THAT THE MAP IS FROM THE 1867 EDITION OF THE ATLAS BLACK'S GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD, NEW EDITION, fol., EDINBURGH: A. & C. BLACK, 1867.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY OF THIS MAP WITH SOME BROWNING, PRIMARILY IN THE MARGINS. THE MAP HAS FULL MARGINS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014- DNF AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-617.
BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : PHILLIPS, PHILIP LEE, A LIST OF GEOGRAPHICAL ATLASES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, AMSTERDAM: THEATRVM ORBIS TERRARVM, LTD, A 1971 REPRINT OF A 1909 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS PUBLICATION, # 849, MAP # 43A (1867 ISSUE), # 6172 (1870 ISSUE); LONG, JOHN, HANDBOOK OF MARYLAND BOUNDARIES, CHICAGO: THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY, 1978, 38.
