DESCRIPTION : THIS CHART IS THE THIRD FROM THE BAY ENTRANCE OF A SERIES OF 6 CHARTS COVERING THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THIS SERIES REPRESENTS THE MOST COMPLETE CHARTING OF THE BAY IN TERMS OF HYDROGRAPHY AND TOPOGRAPHY DONE UP TO THE TIME OF ITS COMPLETION AND IS BASED ON EXTENSIVE TRIANGULATION OF THE WHOLE AREA, WHICH HAD NOT BEEN DONE AS COMPLETELY BEFORE. THE PRIOR EDITION ON WHICH THIS CHART IS BASED WAS THE PRELIMINARY VERSION, WHICH WAS PUBLISHED AS CHART # 10 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1859, WASHINGTON: U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN IS THE SECOND EDITION AND THE FIRST FINISHED EDITION. IT GIVES TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA ON THE NECKS AND COASTAL LANDS ADJACENT TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM BLOODWORTH ISLAND NORTH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER ENTRANCE TO THE ENTRANCE TO POCOMOKE SOUND, SHOWING THE LOCATION OF HOUSES AND BUILDINGS, TYPE TERRAIN, DIRECTION IN WHICH CROPS ARE PLANTED, FARM ROADS, RAILROADS, ETC. IN THE PRIOR EDITION, MOST OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL DETAILS EXCEPT ROADS AND LOCATION OF BUILDINGS HAVE NOT YET BEEN INCLUDED. THE FINISHED VERSION HAS THE SAME TABLE SHOWING THE DATES WHEN THE WORK WAS ACCOMPLISHED. SINCE THE DATES ARE UNCHANGED, THE DELAY IS UNDOUBTEDLY DUE TO THE TIME NECESSARY TO ENGRAVE THE CHART AND THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE CIVIL WAR IN THE INTERVENING YEARS.

HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION INCLUDES SOUNDINGS IN FEET UP TO 18, THEN IN FATHOMS. IT HAS VERY WIDESPREAD INDICATIONS OF THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOM AND HAS SHOALS SHOWN IN SHADING. BUOYS AND CHANNEL COURSES ARE DRAWN. IN SHORT, THIS CHART SUMMARIZES THE VERY BEST DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE ONGOING COAST SURVEY WORK AT THE TIME. THERE ARE EXTENSIVE SAILING DIRECTIONS AND TABLES OF HYDROGRAPHIC AND OTHER INFORMATION ON THE FACE OF THE CHART.

THE COPY OF THIS CHART IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION IS RESTRUCK FROM PLATE 1030 DONE ABOUT 1970. THE DIAGRAM IN THE CENTER LEFT SHOWS AN OVERLAP BETWEEN CHARTS 33 AND 34 JUST NORTH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER.

DATA IS FROM THE 1859 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS, THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND PHOTOCOPIES OF THIS CHART IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS LIST SIX EDITIONS OF THIS CHART # 133 BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED BY CHARTS # 1223 AND 1224 AROUND JUNE, 1913, WHEN A PHOTOLITH WAS MADE.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 [?] - (1859) - THIS CHART HAS THE WORDS "PRELIMINARY CHART OF" BEFORE THE TITLE. IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT OF 1859. IT IS ON PLATE # 706. SEE CHART # 359U1.

- STATE 2 [?] - (1859) - THIS IS A COPY OF THE SAME CHART WITHOUT "PRELIMINARY..." IN THE TITLE, WITH TOPOGRAPHY COMPLETE BELOW THE POTOMAC RIVER, BUT NO DATA AT ALL NORTH OF THE RIVER. A COPY IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. SEE MAP # 359U2.

ED. 2 - (1866) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 1030. THE WORDS "PRELIMINARY CHART OF" IN THE TITLE OF THE PRIOR EDITION NOW READS "COAST CHART NO. 33 SHEET NO. 3 POTOMAC ENTRANCE TANGIER AND POCOMOKE SOUND." AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TITLE DATA IT READS "EDITION OF 1866". A DIAGRAM OF SHEETS OF THE CHART SERIES OF THE BAY IS ON THE CENTER LEFT SIDE. THE SHOAL AREAS ARE NOW SHADED RATHER THAN DOTTED LINES. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ED. 3 - (1872) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 1049.

ED. 4 - (1877) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 1915 IN AUGUST, 1877. APPARENTLY THE REVISION RELATED TO THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND.

ED. 5 - (1905) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 2923 IN MAY, 1905.

ED. 6 - (1907) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 3000 IN SEPT., 1907.

THE CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY A COMBINATION OF CHARTS # 1223 AND 1224 AROUND JUNE, 1913 BY A CHART ENTITLED CHESAPEAKE BAY - WOLF TRAP TO SMITH'S POINT. IT WAS REPUBLISHED FREQUENTLY IN PHOTOLITH FORM. ON JULY 1, 1974 CHART # 1223 WAS CHANGED TO # 12225 WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CONVERTED TO A NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM. LORAN "C" LINES OF POSITION WERE ADDED IN THE DECEMBER 6, 1975 RELEASE.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND REPRODUCTION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS SECOND EDITION OF THE CHART ON HEAVY PAPER, RESTRUCK FROM PLATE 1030 AROUND 1970. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NOAA012-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-704. THE COLLECTION HAS TWO COPIES OF THE PRELIMINARY CHART, BOTH ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. ONE COPY HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-DUD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-504. THE OTHER HAS SOME DARK STAINS AT THE UPPER INTERSECTIONS OF THE FOLDS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-568. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A FULL SIZE REPRODUCTION OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE A LATER STATE OF THE CHART FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-308(REPRO). THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS TWO COPIES OF THE 1862 STATE OF CHART # 33, WHICH INCLUDED PART OF THE DATA ON THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN. THEY HAVE ACQ. #S OF C015-2U1 AND B014-HT AND MDHR #S OF MSA SC1399-511 AND MSA SC1399-634 RESPECTIVELY.
