THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE UNITED STATES COAST
SURVEY, SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR
1866., WHICH CONTAINS A "REPORT ON THE GEODETIC CONNECTION OF
THE TWO PRIMARY BASE-LINES IN NEW YORK AND MARYLAND, THEIR DEGREE
OF ACCORDANCE AND ACCURACY OF THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION
INTERVENING, WITH THE RESULTING ANGLES AND DISTANCES AS FINALLY
ADJUSTED. PREPARED BY CHARLES A. SCHOTT, ASSISTANT." THIS REPORT
WAS APPENDIX No. 8 ON PAGES 49-51. THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION BASE
LINE IN MARYLAND WAS ON KENT ISLAND, WHERE THE UNCERTAINTY WAS
CALCULATED AT 1 PART IN 228,000 FOR THE BASE LINE. (SEE MAP #
344U5 FOR A DISCUSSION OF THE REASONS FOR ITS SELECTION).
DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS FOR 1866 AND FROM
OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
