NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE DEPICTED. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER AND CLOSE OCEAN AREAS ARE SHOWN BY PARALLEL SHORE CONFORMING LINES. ON THE REVERSE SIDE IS A PORTION OF THE "GEOGRAPHICAL INDEX, OR READY REFERENCE". THE MAP IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN MADE BY ENGRAVING A STEEL PLATE AND THEN TRANSFERRING TO A LITHOGRAPHIC STONE FOR REPRODUCTION.

A MAP BY THIS TITLE FIRST APPEARS IN JOHNSON'S NEW ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD..., NEW YORK: 1865, AS MAP # 33-34. THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS PUBLISHED IN THE 1866 EDITION OF THE SAME ATLAS AS MAP # 34-35, PUBLISHED BY A.J. JOHNSON. THE MAP CONTINUES TO CARRY THE 1864 DATE. THE 1864 DATE WAS THE COPYRIGHT DATE OF A SIMILAR MAP WITH DIFFERENT INSETS AND A TITLE OF "JOHNSON'S VIRGINIA DELAWARE AND MARYLAND", WHICH APPEARED IN THE 1864 EDITION OF JOHNSON'S NEW ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD, PUBLISHED BY JOHNSON AND WARD.

WHILE MANY OF THE JOHNSON MAPS ARE TAKEN FROM COLTON PLATES, A MAP BY THIS TITLE HASN'T YET BEEN DISCOVERED BY WRITER IN COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS. THE DESCRIPTIONS AND TEXT ARE ATTRIBUTED TO RICHARD SWAINSON FISHER, WHO PREVIOUSLY HAD WORKED WITH J.H. COLTON & CO. EDITIONS OF THE FAMILY ATLAS, PUBLISHED FIRST IN 1860, APPEARED UNDER VARIOUS PUBLISHERS NAMES UNTIL 1885.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP APPEARED IN THE 1865 JOHNSON'S FAMILY ATLAS, WITH NUMEROUS INSET VIEWS. IT IS SOMEWHAT LARGER (39.8 X 55.6 CM.) THAN A 1864 MAP FROM WHICH IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN. THAT MAP HAD ONLY AN INSET VIEW OF "FORTRESS MONROE VA. COPIES BY CONSENT FROM MAGNUS PICTURE" IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER. THAT EARLIER MAP APPEARED IN JOHNSON'S NEW ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD, NEW YORK: JOHNSON AND WARD, 1864, MAP 33-34. A SIMILAR MAP TO THE 1865 ISSUE IS ALSO IN THE 1866 EDITION OF THE FAMILY ATLAS, PUBLISHED BY A.J. JOHNSON.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY COLORED FOR THE TITLE STATES, BUT BLACK AND WHITE FOR THE REMAINDER. THE MAP IS IN FAIR CONDITION, BUT HAS A TEAR ALONG THE LOWER CREASE AND IN THE TOP RIGHT MARGIN, WHICH EXTENDS THROUGH THE DECORATIVE BORDER. THE MAP IS BROWNING ALONG THE EDGES. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF N018-HUG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-279. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY OF A MAP WITH "& WEST VIRGINIA" LEFT OUT OF THE TITLE. IT IS SIMILARLY COLORED AND HAS MARGINAL TEARS AND BROWNING. SEE MAP # 364J7. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF N018-H2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-280.
