GAMBLE PHILADELPHIA." (BELOW SCALE IN LEFT BOTTOM CORNER). SCALE OF MILES (40 MILES = 4.6 CM., BELOW TITLE). "ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS IN THE YEAR 1865 BY S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL, JR. DESCRIPTION : THIS COLORED MAP SHOWS THE COUNTIES, SEPARATELY COLORED IN MARYLAND AND DELAWARE. IT WAS INCLUDED IN S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL JR.'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS... STARTING IN 1865. PHILLIPS ATLASES, # 846 INDICATES THAT "--MAP No. 16 NEW JERSEY. --MARYLAND AND DELAWARE" WAS ADDED. THIS ATLAS WAS COPYRIGHTED IN 1860. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HAS A COPY OF JUST THE MARYLAND-DELAWARE HALF OF THE PAGE DATED 1865 AND SIGNED AT THE BOTTOM BY MITCHELL IN MANUSCRIPT THAT HAS NO MAP NUMBER ON THE MARYLAND-DELAWARE MAP. THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS A LATER STATE AND IS FOUND IN THE 1866 EDITION OF THE ATLAS. THIS ATLAS APPEARED IN NUMEROUS EDITIONS THROUGH 1893. CHANGES AND UPDATING OF MATERIAL OCCURRED ON THE MAP ITSELF. ISSUES THROUGH 1878 HAVE BEEN EXAMINED.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND PHOTOCOPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS ISSUES DATED 1865, 1870 AND 1878 IN ITS POSSESSION AND HAS COPIES OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ISSUES FOR 1866, 1867, 1869, AND 1873. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME BASIC PLATE, BUT ADDITIONS TO THE ROAD SYSTEM, ADDITIONS TO RAILROADS AND OF NEW COUNTIES SUCH AS GARRETT AND WICOMOCO SHOW THAT THE MAP WAS UPDATED.

1865 ISSUE - THE DECORATIVE BORDER HAS TANGLED WIDE RIBBON IN THE CORNERS AND A FLORAL DESIGN IN THE INTERVENING AREA. THE MAP # "27." IS LEFT OF THE TITLE. THE DATE "...1865..." IS IN THE IMPRINT BELOW THE BORDER. NO WICOMOCO COUNTY IS SHOWN, SINCE IT WASN'T FORMED UNTIL 1868. SEE MAP # 365G6.

1866 ISSUE - HAS NO MAP # AND IS DATED 1865. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

1867 ISSUE - THE MAP # IS "27." AND IT IS DATED 1867. THE BORDER IS CHANGED TO INTERTWINED VINES. A ROAD IS ADDED FROM SALISBURY TO CRISFIELD AND FROM SMYRNA TO GREENSBORO. SEE MAP # 367G5.

1869 ISSUE - THE MAP # IS "28." AND IT IS DATED 1867. WICOMOCO COUNTY IS SHOWN. A ROAD IS IN FROM CONCORD, DELAWARE TO CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND AND FROM WEST MINSTER TO MIDDLEBURG. SEE MAP # 369G5.

1870 ISSUE - THE MAP # IS "28." AND IT IS DATED 1870. NUMEROUS ROADS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE EASTERN SHORE OF MARYLAND, WHICH WERE ABSENT IN THE EARLIER ISSUES. SEE MAP # 370G5.

1873 ISSUE - HAS NO MAP # AND IS DATED 1872. THE IMPRINT IS CHANGED TO "ENTERED...1872... IN THE OFFICE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS AT WASHINGTON". GARRETT COUNTY IS SHOWN. IT WAS FORMED IN DEC., 1872. THE "PHILADa.-WILMn. AND BALTIMORE R.R." HAS BEEN ADDED, AS HAS THE "BALTIMORE AND OHIO R.R.", THE "DELAWARE R.R." AND THE "MARYLAND & DEL. R.R." NUMEROUS ROADS HAVE BEEN ADDED. SEE MAP # 373G3.

1878 ISSUE - THE DECORATIVE BORDER IS THE SAME AS THE 1870 ISSUE, EXCEPT THAT IT IS UPSIDE DOWN, COMPARED WITH THE 1870 ISSUE. THUS, MANY OF THE LEAVES POINT DOWNWARD. THE MAP IS DATED 1878. PAGE # "45" HAS BEEN ADDED AT THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN OF THE PAGE, ABOVE THE MAP OF NEW JERSEY. ADDITIONAL ROADS HAVE BEEN ADDED ACROSS THE STATE. SEE MAP # 378G5.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND PHOTOCOPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A REPRODUCTION OF AN 1865 ISSUE FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SIGNED BY MITCHELL AT THE BOTTOM AND DATED 3-15-1865 AND XEROX COPIES OF THE MAP FROM THE 1866, 1867, 1869 AND 1873 ATLASES. THEIR RESPECTIVE MDHR #S ARE MSA SC1399-881 (1866), 880 (1867), 879 (1869) AND 878 (1873).
