DESCRIPTION : IN ITS VARIOUS EDITIONS AND STATES, THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY PUBLISHED MAPS OF MARYLAND IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. THE MAP COVERS FROM SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA TO NORTHERN VIRGINIA AND FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE WESTERN MARYLAND BORDER. IT SHOWS ROADS, RAILROADS, COUNTIES AND COUNTY SEATS, CANALS, CITIES AND TOWNS AND HAS AN INSET OF WASHINGTON D.C. WITH BUILDINGS AND OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST INDICATED. NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE GIVEN. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER AND CLOSE OCEAN AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS MAP APPEARED IN JOHNSON'S FAMILY ATLAS, 1865 EDITION, AND IT IS SIMILAR TO AND PROBABLY A DIFFERENT STATE OF ONE BY COLTON, THAT WAS DATED 1855 AND PUBLISHED BY J.H. COLTON. THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS COPIES OF SEVERAL STATES OF THIS MAP. IT IS INTERESTING THAT THE CHANGE ON JAN. 5, 1857 OF THE COUNTY SEAT OF BALTIMORE COUNTY TO TOWSON FROM BALTIMORE WAS NOT NOTED.

JOHNSON AND WARD WERE SUCCESSORS TO JOHNSON AND BROWNING AROUND 1862. JOHNSON AND BROWNING WERE SUCCESSORS TO J.H. COLTON IN 1860. LATER, AFTER 1865, A.K. JOHNSON TOOK OVER FOR JOHNSON AND WARD AND FINALLY O.W. GRAY SUCCEEDED TO THE BUSINESS. THE DATE OF THE MAP WAS LISTED AS 1865 BY NEBENZAHL AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. THE GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON THE MAP IS BEFORE 1867, WHEN WICOMICO COUNTY WAS CREATED FROM SOMERSET AND WORCESTER COUNTIES AND WHEN ELLICOTT MILLS WAS CHANGED TO ELLICOTT CITY. IT WAS AFTER 1851, WHEN HOWARD COUNTY WAS CREATED FROM ANN ARUNDEL C. LT. COL. GRAHAM'S REPORT, REFERRED TO IN THE NOTE WAS DATED FEB., 1850. THE POPULATION FIGURES FOR GEORGETOWN AND WASHINGTON, D.C. IN THE INSET ARE DATED 1850 AND WERE PROBABLY PUBLISHED LATER.

SEVERAL OTHER STATES AND/OR EDITIONS OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN TO THE WRITER AT THIS TIME. SEE EDITION AND STATE INFORMATION SECTION FOR MAP REFERENCES.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, AND RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND PHOTOCOPIES OF THIS MAP SERIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
