SCALE OF 40 MILES (BOTTOM CENTER). INSET OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA (6.7 X 9.8 CM., HAS A MAP # OF "22." IN BOTTOM LEFT OF INSET, BOTTOM LEFT CORNER, WITH THE TITLE ACROSS THE FACE OF THE INSET). INSET OF THE CITY OF BALTIMORE (4.0 X 5.5 CM., WITH ROUNDED TOP, BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER, HAS A MAP # OF "23." IN TOP CENTER OF INSET). THERE ARE NO SCALES FOR THE INSETS. THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. A DECORATIVE BORDER 1.7 CM. WIDE SURROUNDS THE MAP, CONSISTING OF LEAVES, VINES, FLOWERS AND INTERTWINED WIDE RIBBON AT THE CORNERS. THE MAP EXTENDS THROUGH THE LONGITUDE BORDER AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM AND THROUGH THE LATITUDE BORDER ON THE LEFT. LONGITUDE FROM GREENWICH (TOP BORDER) AND FROM WASHINGTON (BOTTOM BORDER). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE MAP IS IN FULL COLOR FOR THE STATES SPECIFIED IN THE TITLE, WITH EACH COUNTY SEPARATELY COLORED. MAJOR ROADS AND CANALS ARE SHOWN. LONGITUDE IS WEST FROM GREENWICH IN THE TOP BORDER AND FROM WASHINGTON IN THE BOTTOM BORDER. WATER AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE INDICATED. MAJOR ROADS, RAILROADS AND CANALS ARE SHOWN. WATER AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. NO SOUNDINGS OR HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE INCLUDED. THIS MAP MAY HAVE BEEN DRAWN AND ENGRAVED BY W. WILLIAMS. PHILLIPS NOTES THAT THE MAPS IN THE 1860 ATLAS WERE SO DRAWN AND ENGRAVED. KARPINSKI, HOWEVER, SAYS THAT ONLY SOME OF THEM WERE DONE BY WILLIAMS. THIS 1864 ISSUE HAD A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DECORATIVE BORDER THAN THE PRIOR ISSUES. BY THE TIME THE 1864 ISSUE WAS RELEASED, THE MAP HAD BECOME CROWDED AND SHOWED SIGNS OF MANY DIFFERENT ENGRAVERS WORK.
DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES, FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THIS MAP FROM 1860-1865 FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP APPEARED IN MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS WITH THIS NAME UNTIL ABOUT THE 1882 EDITION. NOT ALL ISSUES HAVE BEEN EXAMINED. HOWEVER, THOSE FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND FROM THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION FROM 1860 THROUGH 1865 HAVE. CHANGES AND ADDITIONS TO TOWNS AND ROADS WERE MADE IN MOST ISSUES.

A NUMBER OF ADDITIONAL PLACE NAMES ARE LOCATED IN CENTRAL MARYLAND, e.g. COCKEYSVILLE, PHOENIX, HEREFORD, COOPERS, UNIONVILLE, POBLES, DARNESTOWN, BLADENBURG, QUEEN ANNE, FT. CAMPBELL, ANNAPOLIS JUNCTION, PERRYMAN AND, ON THE EASTERN SHORE, QUEENSTOWN. SEE MAP # 362M5.
1863 ISSUE - MAP "19." DATED 1860. PHILADELPHIA INSET # "20."(LEFT BOTTOM CORNER). BALTIMORE INSET # "21." "KEARNEY V." IS ADDED NW OF HARPER'S FERRY AND THREE NAMES ARE ADDED JUST SOUTH OF WILLIAMSPORT, MD. SEE MAP # 363M5.
1864 ISSUE - MAP # "21." DATED 1860. PHILADELPHIA INSET #"22," (LEFT BOTTOM CORNER). BALTIMORE INSET # "23." NO CHANGES OCCURRED IN MARYLAND NOMENCLATURE, BUT A DIFFERENT DECORATIVE BORDER WAS SUBSTITUTED. PRIOR BORDERS SHOWED 4 VINE STEMS POINTING OUTWARD IN EACH CORNER THROUGH WIDE RIBBON. THIS ISSUE HAS NO SUCH STEMS. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
1865 ISSUE - MAP # "21." DATED 1860. PHILADELPHIA INSET (BOTTOM LEFT CORNER). CITY OF BALTIMORE INSET (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). INSETS ARE UNNUMBERED. THE ROAD FROM ORANGEVILLE TO COLUMBUS IN THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF PENNSYLVANIA, PREVIOUSLY SHOWN AS A DOTTED LINE, IS NOW A SOLID LINE. THE ROAD EAST FROM SALEM, N.J. IS NOW ALSO A SOLID LINE, AS IS THE ROAD FROM THE NORTH INTO CAPE MAY. THE MARYLAND PORTION APPEARS UNCHANGED. THE DECORATIVE BORDER IS AS IN THE 1864 ISSUE. SEE MAP # 365M7.
ADDITIONAL STATES WERE ISSUED UP UNTIL AROUND 1882, BUT LATER STATES HAVE NOT BEEN EXAMINED.
