DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE ELEVENTH EDITION OF AT LEAST TWELVE OF A MAP BY THIS NAME PUBLISHED IN THE 1860S. THE EXACT DATE IS UNCERTAIN, BUT SINCE THE "BATTLE GROUND OF THE WILDERNESS AND SPOTTSYLVANIA COURT-HOUSE. MAY-5-23, 1864" IS NOTED AT THE TOP CENTER, A TENTATIVE DATE OF 1864 IS USED. STEPHENSON LISTS ONE UNNUMBERED EDITION (632.2) IN ADDITION TO THE 9TH (632.3), 10TH (632.4) AND 12TH (632.5) EDITIONS OF THE MAP IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, ALL EXCEPT THE FIRST WITH THE DATE OF "186_". THE FIRST IS DATED 1864. THE INSETS DIFFER BETWEEN THE EDITIONS AND THE PLACEMENTS OF INSETS IS ALSO CHANGED. SOME EDITIONS CONTAIN PORTRAITS OF GENERALS, ALTHOUGH NOT THE ELEVENTH.

THIS CIVIL WAR PLATE SHOWS MOST OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA ON THE MAIN MAP. THE MAP HAS DETAILED PLACE NAMES, SHOWS ROADS AND RAILROADS, WITH THE GREATEST DETAIL BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND RICHMOND. THE MAPS SHOW THAT THEY WERE HURRIEDLY PREPARED WITH MORE EMPHASIS ON CURRENCY THAN ON ACCURACY. THE MAPS ARE PRINTED IN BLUE INK AND THE TITLE, NEAT BORDERS, IMPRINT AND DEDICATION ARE IN RED.

STEPHENSON HAS AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE 10TH EDITION, WITH THE FOLLOWING NOTE: "THE NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON PUBLISHER CHARLES MAGNUS SOLD THE 10TH EDITION OF HIS POPULAR MAP OF "ONE HUNDRED & FIFTY MILES AROUND RICHMOND" FOLDED AND INSERTED IN AN ENVELOPE CAPTAINED 'MAGNUS' HALF DOLLAR PORTFOLIO. FOR THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.' INCLUDED WITH THE MAP IN THIS 'GLORIOUS UNION PACKET', AS THE PUBLISHER CALLED IT, WAS A 'MIRROR OF EVENTS [I.E., LIST OF BATTLES], 2 ILLUSTRATED NOTESHEETS, 1 SONG NOTESHEET, 3 ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES, 6 PORTRAITS OF ARMY AND NAVY OFFICERS, 4 PLAIN NOTESHEETS, 4 PLAIN ENVELOPES, PENHOLDER [AND] PEN AND LEAD- PENCIL.' IT IS NOT KNOWN BY THE WRITER WHETHER ANY ISSUE OF THE ELEVENTH EDITION WAS SIMILARLY PACKAGED.

DATA IS FROM STEPHENSON AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WRITER HAS NOT YET SEEN THE EDITIONS OF THE MAP IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CITED BY STEPHENSON, ALTHOUGH THE LATTER DOES INCLUDE A LARGE REPRODUCTION OF THE 10TH EDITION. THE FIRST MAP CITED HAS A DIFFERENT TITLE ["MAGNUS' HISTORICAL WAR MAP. ONE HUNDRED & FIFTY MILES AROUND RICHMOND"], A SCALE OF 1:920,000 AND A DIFFERENT SIZE (70 X 52 CM.) AND MAY NOT EXACTLY PARALLEL THE OTHERS. THE INSETS OF THAT ISSUE ARE DIFFERENT AND PORTRAITS OF GENERALS GRANT AND LEE ARE INCLUDED. NO REFERENCES HAVE BEEN FOUND ON EDITIONS ONE THROUGH EIGHT, SO THEIR DESCRIPTIONS ARE OMITTED.

9TH EDITION - (186_) - THIS EDITION IS ENTITLED "ONE HUNDRED & FIFTY MILES AROUND RICHMOND. IT MEASURES 66 X 76 CM. AND HAS A SCALE OF 1:880,000. THE MAIN MAP IS CENTERED AROUND RICHMOND AND IS PRINTED IN BLUE WITH THE TITLE AND BORDER IN RED. THE STATEMENT "DEDICATED TO THE GALLANT SOLDIERS, FIGHTING TO SUPPRESS THE REBELLION." IS ON THE MAP. THE INSETS INCLUDE "200 MILES AROUND NATCHEZ, MISS.", "100 MILES AROUND CHATTANOOGA, TENN.", "200 MILES AROUND MONTGOMERY, ALA.", "100 MILES AROUND AUGUSTA, GEO.", "250 MILES AROUND GALVESTON, TEXAS", "250 MILES AROUND CHARLESTON, S.C.", AND TWO SMALLER MAPS AT THE BOTTOM OF MEMPHIS AND SURROUNDINGS AND NASHSVILLE AND SURROUNDINGS. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3884 .R5 186_ .M3.

10TH EDITION - (186_) - THIS MAP IS THE SAME SIZE AND SCALE AND HAS THE SAME TITLE AS THE 9TH EDITION. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY IS FOLDED TO 13 X 21 CM. TO FIT IN AN ENVELOPE ENTITLED "MAGNUS' HALF DOLLAR PORTFOLIO. FOR THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC." THE INSETS APPARENTLY ARE UNCHANGED. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3884 .R5 186_ .M31.

11TH EDITION - (1864?) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE INSETS ARE CHANGED AS NOTED IN THE REMAINING TITLE SECTION OF THIS REPORT. THE TWO SMALL INSETS ARE AT THE TOP WITH A THIRD SMALL ONE ENTITLED "FORTIFICATIONS AROUND RICHMOND" INSERTED BELOW THE CENTER OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAIN MAP. THE TITLES OF TWO OF THE LARGER MAP INSETS ARE ALTERED.

12TH EDITION - (186_) - STEPHENSON DOES NOT NOTE THE SIZE OR SCALE, BUT THEY ARE PROBABLY SIMILAR TO THOSE OF THE 11TH EDITION, SINCE THE INSETS THAT HE LISTS ARE THE SAME AS IN THAT EDITION. THE MAIN DIFFERENCES ARE THE INCLUSION OF PORTRAITS OF GENERALS GRANT, MEADE AND HANCOCK AND THE ALTERATION OF THE EDITION STATEMENT TO READ "TWELFTH EDITION 3000 OF MAGNUS' ALL AROUND MAP." THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3884 .R5 186_ .M32.

DATA IS FROM STEPHENSON AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE 11TH EDITION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF THE 11TH EDITION OF THIS MAP WITH FULL MARGINS BACKED BY LINEN. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW015-HNE AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-541.
