BASED ON A REVIEW OF THE ENTRIES IN PHILLIPS, THIS TITLE WAS IN JOHNSON'S NEW ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD..., NEW YORK: JOHNSON AND WARD, MAP 33-34. IT IS NOT LISTED IN THE 1862 OR 1863 EDITIONS OF THAT ATLAS AND, BY THE 1865 EDITION, THE TITLE HAD BEEN CHANGED TO "VIRGINIA, DELAWARE, MARYLAND & WEST VIRGINIA" AND ADDITIONAL INSET VIEWS WERE ADDED, COVERING THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, THE GENERAL POST OFFICE, THE TREASURY BUILDINGS AND THE PATENT OFFICE. A SIMILAR MAP TO THE 1865 EDITION WAS IN THE 1866 EDITION OF THAT ATLAS, PUBLISHED BY A.J. JOHNSON.
WHILE MANY OF THE JOHNSON MAPS ARE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM J.H. COLTON PLATES (JOHNSON & BROWNING SUCCEEDED J.H. COLTON & CO. IN 1860 AND JOHNSON AND WARD SUCCEEDED JOHNSON & BROWNING IN 1862), A MAP BY THIS TITLE HASN'T YET BEEN DISCOVERED IN COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS.
THE DESCRIPTION AND TEXT IN JOHNSON'S FAMILY ATLAS ARE ATTRIBUTED TO RICHARD SWAINSON FISHER, WHO PREVIOUSLY WORKED WITH J.H. COLTON & CO. EDITIONS OF THE FAMILY ATLAS APPEARED FROM 1860 TO 1885.
DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP HAS NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED. HOWEVER, 1864 IS THE ONLY ISSUE OF THE MAP BY THIS TITLE FOUND THUS FAR. A SOMEWHAT SIMILAR MAP WITH "& WEST VIRGINIA" ADDED TO THE TITLE APPEARED IN THE 1865 JOHNSON'S FAMILY ATLAS, ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL INSET VIEWS. THE 1865 MAP IS LARGER (39.8 X 55.6 CM.) AND IS NOT AS DETAILED ON PLACE NAMES. A SIMILAR MAP IS ALSO IN THE 1866 EDITION OF THAT ATLAS, PUBLISHED BY A.J. JOHNSON. SEE MAP # 366J7.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COLORED COPY FOR THE STATES IN THE TITLE, BUT BLACK AND WHITE FOR THE REMAINDER. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY DATED 1866 PUBLISHED BY A.J. JOHNSON, COLORED SIMILARLY. IT HAS A TEAR ALONG THE LOWER CREASE AND IN THE TOP RIGHT MARGIN, WHICH EXTENDS THROUGH THE DECORATIVE BORDER. THE MAP IS BROWNING ALONG THE EDGES. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF N018-HUG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-279.
