DESCRIPTION : THIS EXTREMELY DETAILED SEA CHART IS SHEET 3 OF A 6 SHEET SERIES COVERING THE ENTIRE BAY. THIS SERIES REPRESENTS THE MOST COMPLETE CHARTING OF THE BAY IN TERMS OF HYDROGRAPHY AND TOPOGRAPHY DONE UP TO THE TIME OF ITS COMPLETION AND IS BASED ON EXTENSIVE TRIANGULATION OF THE WHOLE AREA, WHICH HAD NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE. IT GIVES TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA ON THE NECKS AND COASTAL LANDS ADJACENT TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM THE MOUTH OF THE LITTLE CHOPTANK RIVER IN THE NORTH TO THE MOUTH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER IN THE SOUTH. THIS CHART SHOWS LOCATION OF HOUSES AND BUILDINGS, TYPE TERRAIN, DIRECTION IN WHICH CROPS ARE PLANTED, FARM ROADS, RAILROADS, ETC. HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION INCLUDES SOUNDINGS IN FEET UP TO 18, THEN IN FATHOMS. IT HAS VERY WIDESPREAD INDICATIONS OF THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOM AND HAS SHOALS MARKED BY DOTTED LINES. BUOYS AND CHANNEL COURSES ARE DRAWN. THERE ARE EXTENSIVE SAILING DIRECTIONS AND TABLES OF HYDROGRAPHIC AND OTHER INFORMATION. IN SHORT, THIS CHART SUMMARIZES THE VERY BEST DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE ONGOING COAST SURVEY WORK AT THE TIME. APPARENTLY THIS CHART WAS COMPLETED IN 1862 WITH ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO AN EARLIER PRELIMINARY VERSION, BUT WAS NOT ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1864 RELEASED IN 1866. CHARTS THOUGHT TO BE HELPFUL TO THE SOUTH IN THE CIVIL WAR WERE NOT RELEASED UNTIL THE END OF THE WAR.

SEVEN PLATES OF THIS CHART WERE RELEASED IN 8 STATES UNTIL THE CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 1224 IN JULY, 1913.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1862 AND THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ACCORDING TO THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS, THERE WERE 7 DIFFERENT PLATES OF THIS CHART IN 8 STATES, INCLUDING THE PRELIMINARY EDITION, UNTIL IT WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART 1224 IN JULY, 1913.

ED. 1 - PRELIMINARY ED. - (1857) - THIS WAS THE UNFINISHED VERSION OF THE CHART, PUBLISHED IN THE USCS 1857 ANNUAL REPORT. NEITHER THE TOPOGRAPHY NOR THE HYDROGRAPAHY WAS COMPLETE AT THE TIME. IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER IS THE LEGEND "ELECTROTYPE COPY NO. 1..." THERE IS NOTHING IN THE CENTER TOP MARGIN. THE ENGRAVER'S STATEMENT IS MISSING. THE SCALES ARE BELOW THE NOTES IN THE BOTTOM LEFT AND THE "REDd. DRng." LEGEND IS MISSING FROM THE LEFT BOTTOM. THERE IS NO DIAGRAM OF SHEETS. THE SHOAL AREAS ARE NOT YET SHADED. SEE CHART # 357U4.

ED. 2 - (1862) - THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO COAST CHART NO. 33 CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM CHOPTANK RIVER TO POTOMAC RIVER. THE PLATE NUMBER OF THIS EDITION WAS # 994. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ED. 7 - (1905) - A NEW PLATE # 2924 WAS DONE AND THE CHART WAS RELEASED IN MAY, 1905.

THIS CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 1224, WHICH WAS FIRST ISSUED IN JULY, 1913. CHART # 134 WAS CANCELLED 8/18/13. MANY EDITIONS OF CHART # 1224 WERE PUBLISHED IN MULTIPLE PRINTINGS. ON JULY 1, 1974, THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED TO # 12230, WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CONVERTED TO A NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM. IN AUGUST, 1975, LORAN "C" LINES OF POSITION WERE ADDED. LORAN C RATE 9960 WAS ADDED ON NOVEMBER 11, 1978 AND THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM WAS ADDED WITH EDITION 45 OF DECEMBER 12, 1987.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS, # 134 AND # 1224.
