AN EARLIER PRELIMINARY EDITION WAS ISSUED IN THE 1857 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS, BUT THE DATA WAS NOT THEN COMPLETE. THE FINISHED CHART WAS NOT RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL 1866 BECAUSE OF THE CIVIL WAR.
DATA IS FROM THE 1862 AND 1864 USCS ANNUAL REPORTS TO CONGRESS AND FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS CHART WAS COMPLETED IN 1862 WITH ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO AN EARLIER PRELIMINARY VERSION, BUT IT WAS NOT ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL THE 1864 USCS ANNUAL REPORT, RELEASED IN 1866. CHARTS THOUGHT TO BE HELPFUL TO THE SOUTH DURING THE CIVIL WAR WERE WITHHELD UNTIL THE END OF THE WAR. THIS ONE WAS ILLUSTRATION NO. 18 IN THE 1864 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS.
THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD ON THIS PLATE INDICATES THAT IT WAS CHART NO. 135 FROM 1862 UNTIL IT WAS REPLACED BY CHART NO. 1225 IN JUNE, 1913. A TOTAL OF 8 STATES OF SIX EDITIONS OF CHART NO. 135 FOLLOW AFTER THE PRELIMINARY EDITION OF 1857:
THE PRELIMINARY EDITION WAS INCLUDED IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1857 AND IS ON THIN PAPER. IT WAS UNFINISHED. ITS TITLE READS "MAP OF CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM THE HEAD OF THE BAY TO THE MOUTH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER...SHEET NO. 2 FROM THE MOUTH OF THE MAGOTHY RIVER TO THE MOUTH OF THE HUDSON RIVER." THE DATE IS 1857 IN THE TITLE. THE SCALES ARE IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT BELOW THE NOTES. THERE IS NO MARGINAL WRITING. THE TOPOGRAPHY IS INCOMPLETE AND THE SHOAL AREAS ARE NOT YET SHADED. THERE IS NO DIAGRAM OF SHEETS IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER. SEE MAP # 357U3. ED. # ED. DATE PLATE NO.

CHART NO. 1225, ALSO ON A SCALE OF 1-80,000 WAS ENTITLED "U.S. - EAST COAST - MARYLAND CHESAPEAKE BAY - COVE POINT TO SANDY POINT". THE CHART NUMBER WAS AGAIN CHANGED ON JULY 1, 1974 TO # 12263, WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CHANGED ITS CHART NUMBERING SYSTEM. SOME 27 EDITIONS AND MANY MORE ISSUES WERE PUBLISHED THROUGH 1977. LORAN "C" LINES OF POSITION WERE ADDED IN THE AUGUST 16, 1975 EDITION.
DATA IS FROM THE ANNUAL USCS REPORTS TO CONGRESS, THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THE CHART IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS AND SOME LOSS OF DATA AT INTERSECTIONS OF THE FOLDS. THE FOLDS ARE STRENGTHENED. THE NUMBER "18" IS STAMPED ON THE REVERSE SIDE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DUD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-576. THE COLLECTION HAS A SECOND COPY ON THIN PAPER IN THE SAME CONDITION, WITH AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-503 AND A THIRD IN SIMILAR CONDITION WITH AN ACQ. # OF B014-DUD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399- 624.
