EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE SIX STATES OF THIS MAP KNOWN TO THE WRITER. ONE IS DATED 1862, TWO ARE 1863, TWO ARE 1864 AND ONE IS 1865, DIFFERING MAINLY IN THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION INCLUDED. THE 1862 ISSUE APPEARS TO BE DERIVED IN PART FROM A "MAP OF EASTERN VIRGINIA" (SEE MAP # 362U6), SINCE THE SCALE AND BASIC NOMENCLATURE AND LAYOUT ARE SIMILAR EXCEPT THAT THE STATE MAP INCLUDES MORE NAMES IN SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA AND NORTHERN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE DEMAND FROM THE MILITARY FOR A GOOD MAP OF THE EASTERN VIRGINIA WAR ZONE CAUSED THE EASTERN VIRGINIA MAP TO BE PRINTED FIRST, WHILE THE WORK PROCEEDED ON THE LARGER MAP OF THE STATE.
STATE 1 - (1862) - THIS MAP HAS THE DATE 1862 ABOVE THE MILE SCALE. THERE ARE NO CONCENTRIC 10 MILE CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON. DOYLESTOWN AND NORRISTOWN ARE THE ONLY TWO TOWNS SHOWN ABOVE PHILADELPHIA AND, WHILE IT HAS MANY MORE PENNSYLVANIA PLACE NAMES THAN THE 1862 "MAP OF EASTERN VIRGINIA", IT IS MUCH MORE SPARCE IN PLACE NAMES THAN SUBSEQUENT STATES OF THE MAP. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
STATE 2 - (JULY, 1863) - THIS MAP HAS THE DATE JULY 1863 ABOVE THE MILE SCALE. THERE ARE STILL NO CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON. MANY SECONDARY PLACE NAMES ARE ADDED IN SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA AND NORTHERN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. SEE MAP # 363U2.
STATE 3 - (AUGUST, 1863) - THIS MAP HAS THE DATE AUGUST 1863 ABOVE THE MILE SCALE. THERE ARE NOW 6 FAINT CONCENTRIC 10 MILE CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON. THE PLACE NAMES APPEAR TO BE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF STATE 2. SEE MAP # 363U3.
STATE 4 - (MAY, 1864) - THIS MAP HAS THE DATE MAY 1864 ABOVE THE MILE SCALE. THIS STATE HAS THE NUMBER OF MILES MARKED BY THE SIX CONCENTRIC 10 MILE CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON (e.g. "40 MILES", "50 MILES", ETC. ). SEE MAP # 364U2.
STATE 5 - (OCTOBER, 1864) - THIS MAP HAS THE DATE OCTOBER 1864 ABOVE THE MILE SCALE. THE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED ALTOGETHER. SEE MAP # 364U3.
STATE 6 - (1865) - THIS MAP HAS THE DATE 1865 ABOVE THE MILE SCALE. THE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON HAVE BEEN ADDED BACK. SOME CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE RAILROAD NAMES AND THOSE NAMES HAVE BEEN INSERTED IN DIFFERENT PLACES ON SOME OF THE RALROADS. FOR EXAMPLE, NORTHWEST OF BALTIMORE, THE "WESTMINSTER BRANCH" OF THE OCTOBER, 1864 STATE HAS BEEN ALTERED TO READ "WESTERN MARYLAND R.R." SEE MAP # 365U2.
DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE PHOTOCOPIES OF THE SIX STATES FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
