DESCRIPTION : THIS LITHOGRAPHED MILITARY MAP COVERS FROM THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER TO NORTHERN NORTH CAROLINA AND FROM WEST OF RICHMOND TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. IT WAS COMPILED AT THE U.S. COAST SURVEY OFFICE FROM VARIOUS MAPS AND PLANS DATING FROM 1853 THROUGH 1862 (WHERE DATES ARE GIVEN). WATER AREAS ARE SHOWN IN BLUE, WITH THE REMAINDER OF THE MAP IN BLACK AND WHITE. THERE IS RELATIVELY LITTLE HYDROGRAPHIC DATA, ALTHOUGH THE TOPOGRAPHIC DETAILS ARE EXTENSIVE. THE LOCATION OF FORTIFICATIONS, TOWNS, ROADS, RAILROADS, COAL MINES, ARSENALS, CHURCHES, CANALS, DRAINAGE AND SOME VEGETATION IS GIVEN. STEPHENSON ASSIGNS A TENTATIVE 1862 DATE (WHICH WE HAVE FOLLOWED), WHEREAS PHILLIPS USED 1863.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS, FROM STEPHENSON, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : STEPHENSON LISTS FOUR ISSUES OF THIS 1862 MAP IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND ONE DATED 1865.

ONE ISSUE - (1862) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED. IT HAS THE LIST OF AUTHORITIES IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER.

ANOTHER ISSUE - (1862) - FIVE MILE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND RICHMOND ARE SHOWN, ALONG WITH FORTIFICATIONS, ROADS, RAILROADS, TOWNS, HOUSES, DRAINAGE AND VEGETATION. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY HAS WRITTEN ON IT "TRANSFERRED FROM OFFICE OF CHF. ENGR., DEFENSES OF WASHINGTON, TO ENGR. DEPT., JANY. 1866"

ANOTHER ISSUE - (1862) - THIS ISSUE HAS "DRAWN BY A. LINDENKOHL" IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER. THE LIST OF AUTHORITIES DIFFERS SLIGHTLY FROM THOSE IN THE OTHER ISSUES.

ANOTHER ISSUE - (1862) - THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND PRINCIPAL RIVERS ARE COLORED GREEN. THE LIST OF AUTHORITIES DIFFERS SLIGHTLY. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .U52.

ANOTHER ISSUE - (1865) - IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER IN PURPLE INK: "CAMPS AND ROUTES OF MARCH OF THE U.S. ENGINEER BATTLN. DURING THE PENINSUELA [sic] CAMPAIGN - 1862." [SIGNED] GILBERT THOMPSON, U.S. ENG'R. BATTLN. - 1862. THE MAP IS ANNOTATED IN BLUE INK TO SHOW THE LINES OF MARCH IN 1864 AND IN GREEN INK TO SHOW THE ROUTES OF 1965. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1865 .U5 VAULT.

DATA IS FROM STEPHENSON.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS MAP ON THIN PAPER WITH NUMEROUS TEARS AND HOLES AND CLOSE CROPPED MARGINS ON THE RIGHT AND LEFT. HOLES IN THE TOP MARGIN THAT HAVE BEEN REINFORCED SUGGEST THAT THIS WAS HUNG ON THE WALL BY TACKS. THE STAMP OF THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY IS ON THE REVERSE SIDE. THE ACQ. # IS SW015-DFF AND THE MDHR # IS MSA SC1399-551.
