THERE IS SOME QUESTION REGARDING THE DATE OF THIS MAP, ALTHOUGH 1862 IS NOTED IN THE TITLE DATA. THERE IS AN AD ON VERSO FOR AN 1863 COLTON STATISTICAL PUBLICATION, SO THIS PRINTING MUST HAVE OCCURRED IN THAT YEAR OR LATER. IT IS UNKNOWN WHETHER THERE IS MORE THAN ONE EDITION OF THE MAP.
DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM THE MAP CASE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE SHILLING SERIES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : IN ADDITION TO THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, STEPHENSON CITES A COPY DATED 1864 IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE SIZE IS SHOWN AS 60 X 46 CM. AND THE SCALE AS CA. 1:804,000. "NO. 4" IS PRINTED IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN. THE LOCATION OF THE PUBLISHER IS LISTED BELOW THE TITLE AS "LONDON", RATHER THAN AS "PATERNOSTER ROW LONDON" AS IN THE 1862 ISSUE.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A POOR COLORED COPY THAT HAS NUMEROUS SEPARATIONS AND HOLES AND SOME BROWN SPOTTING. THE COLOR IS A LITTLE FADED, BUT THE IMPRESSION IS GOOD. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW015-HLN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-548.
