THE INITIAL PUBLICATION WAS IN 1863, BUT IT WAS NOT ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1864, WHICH WAS RELEASED IN 1866. CHARTS THOUGHT TO BE USEFUL TO THE SOUTH WERE WITHHELD UNTIL THE END OF THE WAR. THIS ONE WAS ILLUSTRATION NO. 17 IN THE 1864 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS.
DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS FOR 1861 AND 1864, FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS # 136 AND # 1226 AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ACCORDING TO THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS, THERE WERE FIVE DIFFERENT PLATES FOR THIS CHART # 136 PRIOR TO ITS BEING SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 1226. EACH OF THE PLATES WAS REPRINTED MANY TIMES.
PRELIMINARY EDITION - (1857) - THIS CHART WAS UNFINISHED BUT WAS RELEASED IN THE SUPERINTENDENT'S ANNUAL REPORT TO SHOW THE SURVEY PROGRESS. IT IS AVAILABLE ONLY ON THIN PAPER USED IN THAT REPORT. THE TITLE READS "CHESAPEAKE BAY SHEET NO. 1 FROM THE HEAD OF THE BAY TO THE MOUTH OF THE MAGOTHY RIVER." THE DATE IS NOW 1857 IN THE TITLE. THE MARGINAL NOTES IN ED. 1- ST.1 ARE MISSING. THE SCALES ARE IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT. THE DIAGRAM OF SHEETS OF THE 1861 EDITION IS MISSING. THE TOPOGRAPHY IS INCOMPLETE AND THE SHOAL AREAS ARE NOT SHADED. THE NOTES IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT ARE IN TWO COLUMNS RATHER THAN 1 AS IN THE 1861 EDITION. SEE CHART # 357U2.
ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1861) - THE DATE ON THE CHART IS 1861, BUT THE FIRST PUBLICATION WAS IN 1863. THE PLATE NUMBER OF THIS EDITION WAS # 1021. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.

THIS CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 1226, WHICH WAS FIRST ISSUED IN JUNE, 1913 AS PLATE # 3358. THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO CHESAPEAKE BAY - SANDY POINT TO HEAD OF BAY, BUT THE SCALE REMAINED 1-80,000. THE PLATE WAS BEGUN ON 5/21/12 AND FINISHED ON 6/18/13. THE ENGRAVING WAS NOT AN ORIGINAL PLATE BUT A BASSO MADE FROM PLATE # 2797. NUMEROUS REISSUES WERE MADE THROUGH 8/20/20.
SUBSEQUENT PLATES WERE DONE ON APRIL 28, 1921 (PLATE # 3690) AND MARCH 1, 1934 (PLATE # 4210-11-12-13). THE LATTER WAS REVISED AND REISSUED MANY TIMES AT LEAST THROUGH 1968.
