DESCRIPTION : THE MAP COVERS VIRGINIA, INCLUDING WHAT IS NOW WEST VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, DELAWARE AND SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA. IT WAS ONE OF A GREAT NUMBER OF MAPS OF THIS AREA PUBLISHED DURING THE CIVIL WAR TO FILL THE NEEDS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC FOR INFORMATION ON THE WAR AREA. THE TITLE DATA INDICATES THAT THIS WAS THE MAP USED BY GENERAL SCOTT IN PLANNING HIS VIRGINIA CAMPAIGNS, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NO INDEPENDENT CONFIRMATION OF THIS STATEMENT. CONSIDERABLE INFORMATION IS GIVEN REGARDING ITS SOURCES IN THE MEMORANDA ON THE LEFT SIDE. THE MAP IS DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES IN THE DELAWARE AND MARYLAND STATES AS WELL AS IN VIRGINIA. MAJOR TOWNS, ROADS, RAILROADS, AND COUNTY SEATS ARE INCLUDED. THERE IS NO HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION. THE CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE BAYS AND RIVERS ARE SHOWN WITH PARALLEL ENGRAVED LINES. THERE IS A DOTTED LINE IN THE NORTHERN CHESAPEAKE CONNECTING PERRYVILLE, MARYLAND AND ANNAPOLIS WITH THE NOTATION "U.S. ROUTE DURING THE REVOLT IN BALTIMORE". "ROCK HALL" IS SHOWN AS "ROCK HILL", WHICH SUGGESTS THAT DESPITE ALL THE PROTESTATIONS OF ACCURACY IN THE MAP THAT IT TOO WAS HASTILY DONE TO MEET THE MARKET'S NEEDS. THERE ARE MANY MORE NAMES IN VIRGINIA THAN IN MARYLAND.

THE MEMORANDA INDICATES THAT THIS WAS WAS REDUCED FROM THE LARGE NINE SHEET MAP OF VIRGINIA, DONE PRINCIPALLY FROM COUNTY MAPS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF JOHN WOODS, AND THAT LLOYD USED OTHER MAPS AND SURVEYS BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEERS, SOME FROM THE ARCHIVES OF THE EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT AND FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT. ALSO, H.S. TURNER'S MAPS OF ADJOINING STATES ARE SOURCES. THE RAILROADS WERE LOCATED FROM OFFICIAL TIMETABLES. THE MASON & DIXON LINE WAS USED, AND THE WESTERN LINE OF PENNSYLVANIA IS BASED ON WORK BY MESSRS. RITTENHOUSE, PAGE, ANDREWS, LUKENS, EWING, MADISON, HUTCHINS & ELLICOTT. DOCUMENTS FROM THE AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY ARE ALSO CREDITED AS SOURCES.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND THE PHOTOCOPIES OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPIES IN THE COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE AT LEAST THREE STATES AND FIVE ISSUES OF THIS MAP AND PROBABLY MORE.

STATE 1 - ONE ISSUE - (1861) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

- ANOTHER ISSUE - (1861) - THE MAP IS SIMILAR TO THE OTHER 1861 ISSUE, BUT THE ADVERTISING IS IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN, ORIENTED WITH THE BOTTOM TO THE LEFT. IT IS CUT AND MOUNTED TO 8 IN. X 5 IN.

STATE 2 - (1862) - ONE ISSUE - THE TITLE IS ALTERED TO "...CORRECTED AND REVISED BY J.T. LLOYD TO 1862, FROM SURVEYS MADE BY CAPT. W. ANGELO POWELL, OF THE U.S. TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS." THIS STATE IS ALSO COLORED. IT IS CUT AND MOUNTED TO FOLD TO 10 IN. X 6 IN. THE MAP STILL PROJECTS INTO THE TOP AND RIGHT MARGINS IN THIS STATE. TO THE RIGHT OF THE MAP TITLE, UNDER THE HEADING "READY." IS A LIST OF OTHER LLOYD MAPS AVAILABLE FOR SALE. SEE MAP # 362L5.

ANOTHER ISSUE - (1862) - THIS ISSUE IS ALTERED TO INCLUDE A WARNING TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAP AGAINST STOPPING AT THE BURNETT HOUSE, CINCINNATI, OHIO. THE LIST OF "READY" MAPS IS NOW TO THE LEFT OF THE MAP. MEMORANDA DESCRIBING THE SOURCES AND PROJECTION USED IN THE MAP WAS ELIMINATED IN THIS ISSUE.

STATE 3 - (1863) - THIS STATE IS SIMILAR TO STATE 2 EXCEPT FOR THE ADDITION OF A TESTIMONIAL FROM WILLIAM A. BRYAN, CHIEF CLERK, POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT, DATED FEBRUARY 10, 1863.

DATA IS PARTIALLY FROM STEPHENSON AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND PHOTOCOPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COLORED COPY OF THE 1861 STATE OF THE MAP, WITH CONSIDERABLE BROWNING AND FADING OF THE COLORS. THE MAP IS BACKED WITH CONTEMPORARY LINEN. THERE ARE SOME WEAK SPOTS ALONG THE FOLDS AND THE RIGHT MARGIN IS PARTIALLY MISSING IN SPOTS. THE MAP IS ACCOMPANIED BY A BOARD MAP COVER 19 X 13 CM. FROM WHICH IT IS DETACHED. THE GOLD WRITING ON THE FRONT COVER READS "LLOYD'S $100,000 TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP OF VIRGINIA. USED BY THE WAR DEPARTMENT." IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW015-HNU AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-540. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE 1861 ISSUE FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AT 80% OF THE ORIGINAL SIZE, WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-396 (REPRO) AND A PHOTOCOPY OF THE 1862 STATE FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AT 100% OF THE ORIGINAL SIZE, WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-390 (REPRO).
