THIS MAP COULD NOT BE POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED IN PHILLIPS. JOHNSON & BROWNING SUCCEEDED J.H. COLTON & Co. IN 1860 AND MANY OF THE PLATES IN THE FAMILY ATLAS, PUBLISHED FROM 1860 TO 1885, WERE FROM COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS. THIS PARTICULAR MAP APPEARED IN SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT FORM AT LEAST AS EARLY AS 1855. THE 1862 EDITION OF THE FAMILY ATLAS IN PHILLIPS SHOWS THAT THIS MAP HAS THE INSET OF D.C. SINCE JOHNSON AND WARD SUCCEEDED TO THE BUSINESS OF JOHNSON & BROWNING IN 1862, A c1861 DATE SEEMS REASONABLE FOR THE MAP.
DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE VARIOUS STATES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
