EDMUND BLUNT BEGAN NAUTICAL PUBLISHING IN 1796 WITH HIS PUBLICATION OF THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT BY CAPT. LAWRENCE FURLONG. HE AND HIS SONS WHO SUCCEEDED HIM IN THE BUSINESS SOON BEGAN CHART PUBLISHING. DURING THE 1820S THE FIRM INCREASINGLY USED DATA FROM ITS OWN SURVEYS, WHEREAS EARLIER CHARTS PUBLISHED BY THEM WERE COMPILED BY OTHERS OR COPIED WITH MINOR CHANGES. BY 1830, EDMUND BLUNT'S FIRM BECAME KNOWN AS E. & G.W. BLUNT, AFTER EDMUND'S RETIREMENT FROM THE FIRM AND HIS ASSOCIATION WITH THE COAST SURVEY. HIS SONS, YOUNG EDMUND AND GEORGE WILLIAM BLUNT TOOK OVER. GEORGE WILLIAM PRINCIPALLY RAN THE BUSINESS, WHILE EDMUND BECAME AN ASSISTANT IN THE COAST SURVEY. MANY OF THE FIRMS ASSETS WERE SOLD IN 1867 AND 1868, INCLUDING THE PLATES AND COPYRIGHTS OF THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT, OTHER BOOKS, CHARTS AND THREE COPPERPLATE PRESSES. IN 1866, THE NAME OF THE COMPANY WAS CHANGED TO BLUNT & NICHOLS AND THE FIRM WAS FINALLY CLOSED IN 1872. THE CHARTS PUBLISHED BY THE BLUNT FIRM FROM 1860 TO 1864 WERE UNDOUBTEDLY USED AS AIDS IN THE CIVIL WAR.

ANOTHER STATE - (1861) - THE LITHOGRAPHER'S NAME IS DROPPED AND FORTS CORCORAN, RUNYON, ALBANY AND ELLSWORTH ARE SHOWN ON THE VIRGINIA SIDE OF THE POTOMAC RIVER AT WASHINGTON.
