DESCRIPTION : THIS EXCELLENT PICTORIAL MAP OF
THE SEAT OF WAR CENTERS ON THE CHESA- PEAKE BAY TIDEWATER AREA,
MARYLAND AND NORTHERN VIRGINIA. IT WAS PUBLISHED ON PAGES 360 AND
361 OF THE HARPER'S WEEKLY MAGAZINE OF JUNE 8, 1861. ON
PAGE 359 IT STATES "ON PAGES 360 AND 361 WE PUBLISH A LARGE
BIRDSEYE VIEW OF THE SEAT OF WAR IN VIRGINIA AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD,
WHICH WILL ENABLE OUR READERS TO FOLLOW THE MARCH OF THE ARMIES
INTELLIGENTLY." THIS STATEMENT IS FOLLOWED BY A FEW EXPLANATORY
PARAGRAPHS ABOUT NORFOLK, LYNCHBURG, FREDERICKSBURG, PETERSBURG,
YORKTOWN AND WINCHESTER.
THE MAP IS PARTICULARLY CURIOUS BECAUSE IT IS PROBABLY THE ONLY MAP
OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA THAT IS ORIENTED WITH SOUTH AT THE TOP.
THE ENGRAVING AND COLORING GIVE A THREE DIMENSIONAL EFFECT, WHICH
IS QUITE REALISTIC. THE MAJOR TOWNS, ROADS AND RAILROADS ARE
SHOWN, WITH THE LATTER EMPHASIZED IN RED AND THE RAILROAD LINES
IDENTIFIED.
DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THIS MAP IN THE
HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE
OF THIS MAP IS KNOWN TO THE WRITER.
