DESCRIPTION : THIS CARTOGRAPHIC VIEW WAS A PART OF A SERIES DONE BY JOHN BACHMANN DEPICTING THE ENTIRE CONFEDERACY. EACH CARRIES THE SUBTITLE "PANORAMA OF THE SEAT OF WAR." IN THE TOP MARGIN. THIS IS THE FIRST STATE OF A VIEW THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN ANOTHER STATE IN 1864 BY CHARLES MAGNUS. IT SHOWS THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY AS FAR NORTH AS HAVRE DE GRACE AND WEST TO WESTERN MARYLAND. THE PRINT IS A THREE COLOR LITHOGRAPH USING BLACK, YELLOW AND BLUE STONES. THIS PERMITTED THE ARTIST TO SHOW RELIEF, CLOUDS, THE GLARE OF CANNON FIRE AND SMOKE. REMARKABLE DETAIL IS SHOWN, WITH CITIES, ROADS, RAILROADS, HARBORS AND THE LAY OF THE LAND FACING THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC. THE PANORAMA, HOWEVER, IS PRIMARILY MILITARY IN NATURE, SHOWING THE VIRGINIA LANDSCAPE AS AN ARMED CAMP, PARTICULARLY AROUND FREDERICKSBURG, AQUIA CREEK, THE JAMES PENINSULA, NORFOLK AND NEWPORT NEWS. FORT MONROE IS CAREFULLY DETAILED. THE BATTLE OF FIRST BULL RUN IS DEPICTED IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA.

BACKMANN, A GERMAN EMIGRANT, WAS THE FIRST TO USE THE TERM "BIRD'S EYE VIEW". REPS STATES THAT "NO FINER ARTIST OF CITY VIEWS WORKED IN AMERICA THAN JOHN BACHMANN."

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO STATES OF THIS PANORAMA KNOWN TO THE WRITER. BOTH APPEAR TO BE FROM THE SAME STONES, WITH CHANGES ONLY IN THE MARGINS, ALTHOUGH A DETAILED COMPARISON OF THE IMAGE HAS NOT YET BEEN MADE.

STATE 1 - (1861) - ONE ISSUE - THIS STATE HAS A TABLE OF DISTANCE FROM FT. MONROE TO EIGHT OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN AND A TABLE OF DISTANCES FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. TO EIGHT OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE RIGHT BOTTOM MARGIN. THE TITLE ACROSS THE TOP HAS FLOURISHES AND SCROLLING ABOVE THE TITLE. THE IMPRINTS IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN ARE AS DESCRIBED HEREIN AND DIFFER FROM THOSE IN STATE 2. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

- (1861) - ANOTHER ISSUE - STEPHENSON NOTES A SECOND ISSUE, COPYRIGHTED IN 1861 ON WHICH THE CLOUDS IN THE SKY AND THE SMOKE OVER MANASSAS ARE LACKING.

STATE 2 - (1864) - THE TABLES IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN ARE ELIMINATED, THE WRITING UNDER THE BOTTOM TITLE IS GONE AND THE FLOURISHES ABOVE THE TOP TITLE HAVE BEEN REMOVED. THE IMPRINTS IN THE BOTTOM ARE CHANGED AND NOW REFER TO CHARLES MAGNUS AS PUBLISHER AND GIVE THE DATE OF 1864. SEE MAP # 364B2.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY AND PHOTOGRAPH OF THE TWO STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM STEPHENSON.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL FULL-MARGINED AND COLORED COPY IN SUPERB CONDITION OF THIS FIRST STATE AND A POLAROID PICTURE OF STATE 2. THE FIRST STATE HAS AN ACQ. # OF A016-HE2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-491.
