DESCRIPTION : THIS U.S. COAST SURVEY PRELIMINARY CHART OF THE PATUXENT RIVER GIVES DETAILED, BUT NOT COMPLETE, SOUNDINGS AND OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION, ALTHOUGH RELATIVELY LITTLE TOPOGRAPHY. THE 1859 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS INDICATES THAT IT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SKETCH 13, WHICH IS THE PRELIMINARY CHART OF THIS AREA DESCRIBED HEREIN. THAT NUMBER CORRESPONDS TO THE ONE IN THE LEFT TOP MARGIN. THE REPORT HAS THIS TO SAY OF THE WORK ON THIS AREA:" "AS A BASIS FOR COMPLETING THE SUPPLEMENTARY SOUNDINGS REQUIRED IN THE PATUXENT, ASSISTANT I. HULL ADAMS STARTED ON THE 19TH OF APRIL, AT HOLLAND'S POINT, AND TRACED BOTH SHORES OF THAT RIVER NORTHWARD TO HALL'S CREEK, USING POINTS FURNISHED BY THE TRIANGULATION OF LIEUT. J.P. ROY, U.S.A. THE MOUTHS AND LOWER PORTIONS OF SWANSTON CREEK AND HUNTING CREEK WERE INCLUDED IN THE WORKING SHEET, ON WHICH WERE ALSO MARKED THE STEAMBOAT LANDINGS AT BENEDICT, TRUEMAN'S POINT, HOLLAND'S CLIFF, MAGRUDER'S FERRY, AND LOWER MARLBORO. ABOUT FOURTEEN MILES OF THE COURSE OF THE PATUXENT... ARE REPRESENTED ON THE MAP OF THIS SEASON. THE LENGTH OF SHORE-LINE TRACED AND FURNISHED TO THE HYDROGRAPHIC PARTY IS ABOUT THIRTY SEVEN MILES." "THE SOUNDINGS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE CHART OF THIS RIVER WERE MADE TOWARD THE CLOSE OF MAY BY THE PARTY OF COMMANDER W.T. MUSE, U.S.N., ASSISTANT COAST SURVEY, WORKING WITH THE BOATS OF THE STEAMER HETZEL. FROM THE LIMITS REACHED LAST SEASON... THE WORK WAS EXTENDED UPWARD TO HALL'S CREEK,..., SHORELINE BEING FURNISHED AT THE SAME TIME BY ASSISTANT ADAMS."

THE 1863 REPORT SHOWS THAT THIS PRELIMINARY CHART WAS BEING ENGRAVED IN THAT YEAR AND WAS SUPPLEMENTED BY A SECOND SHEET OF THE UPPER PATUXENT ON A SCALE OF 1/30,000, THAT WAS ALSO BEING ENGRAVED. THE 1864 REPORT INDICATES THAT THERE WAS A VERSION OF THE UPPER PATUXENT PRELIMINARY CHART RELEASED IN 1860. A REVISED AND COMPLETED VERSION OF THIS CHART WAS DONE IN 1880.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS, THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THE CHART IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD SHOWS THAT THIS CHART WAS THE FIRST, ALBEIT A PRELIMINARY EDITION. THE SECOND EDITION IS LISTED AS PLATE No. 784 AND IT WAS DATED 1880. HOWEVER, THE 1881 USC&GS ANNUAL REPORT INDICATES THAT THIS EDITION WAS ACTUALLY PUBLISHED ON JUNE 1, 1881. THIS CHART, IN ITS TWO EDITIONS WAS CANCELLED AND REPLACED BY CHART # 539 IN AUGUST, 1909, WHICH COVERS THE ENTIRE PATUXENT RIVER.

STATE 1 - (1859) - THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE TITLE READS "PRELIMINARY CHART OF PATUXENT RIVER MARYLAND LOWER PART". THE CHART DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY TOPOGRAPHY. SAILING DIRECTIONS ARE GIVEN IN A COLUMN NEXT TO THE LIGHT HOUSE INFORMATION.

STATE 2 - (1880) - THIS CHART IS ENTITLED "PATUXENT RIVER MARYLAND LOWER PART". TOPOGRAPHIC INFORMATION IS ADDED FROM COVE AND CEDAR POINTS TO SETTERLY POINT. THE SAILING DIRECTIONS HAVE BEEN DELETED. NO DATE IS SHOWN IN THE TITLE INFORMATION. SEVERAL ISSUES OF THIS STATE WERE PUBLISHED. SEE MAP # 380U5.

CHART # 539, WHICH REPLACED STATE 2 IN 1909 COVERED THE ENTIRE RIVER, SO IT SUPERSEDED NOT ONLY THE CHART DCESCRIBED HEREIN, BUT ALSO THE CHART OF THE UPPER PART.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS CHART ON THIN PAPER WITH SLIGHT BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B016-DHD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-505. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF STATE 2 PRINTED ON HEAVY PAPER IN BLUISH GREEN INK. IT APPARENTLY WAS AN OFF PRINT DONE AROUND 1970 FROM THE 1881 PLATE # 784. HOWEVER, IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN UPDATED AT LEAST THROUGH 1897 BECAUSE THE MAGNETIC VARIATION DATA IN THE COMPASS ROSE IS THROUGH THAT YEAR. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NOAA012-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-683. IN ADDITION, THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE CHART SHOWING THE UPPER PART OF THE PATUXENT RIVER, STATE 2, ON HEAVY PAPER IN BLUISH-GREEN INK. IT ALSO APPARENTLY WAS AN OFF PRINT FROM THE 1881 PLATE # 863 DONE AROUND 1970. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NOAA012-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-682.
