EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 384 SHOWS FIVE DIFFERENT PLATES WERE USED FROM 1849 THROUGH THE NOVEMBER, 1880 EDITION. WHILE THE DATE OF THE FIRST, OR PRELIMINARY EDITION IS GIVEN AS 1849, THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE FIRST ACTUAL PUBLICATION WAS IN 1856. THE FIFTH EDITION INVOLVED A NAME CHANGE TO "PATAPSCO RIVER & BALTIMORE HARBOR". FROM MARCH, 1892 THROUGH FEBRUARY, 1899, THERE WERE FIVE MORE RELEASES OF CHART 384 UNDER THE NAME "BALTIMORE HARBOR & APPROACHES". THE SCALE WAS ENLARGED TO 1/40,000. CHART 384 WAS SU[PERCEDED BY NUMBER 549 ENTITLED "APPROACHES TO BALTIMORE HARBOR" ON A SCALE OF 1/40,000. FREQUENT EDITIONS AND PRINTS WERE SUBSEQUENTLY RELEASED. THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD SHOWS 45 FROM 1900 THROUGH 1977. IN 1974, NOAA CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM AND THE CHART NUMBER BECAME 12278, WITH THE TITLE "CHESAPEAKE BAY APPROACHES TO BALTIMORE HARBOR".
ED. 1 - (1856) - UNDER THE TITLE IS ".... PUBLISHED IN 1856 SCALE 1/60,000". NOTHING IS IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN EXCEPT THE TWO SCALES. "No.8" IS IN THE LEFT TOP MARGIN. "ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 2..." IS IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN. THERE IS NO "NOTE" ABOVE THE TIDES TABLE. THERE IS A SINGLE TABLE REGARDING LATITUDE, LONGITUDE AND MAGNETIC VARIATION IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER. THE THREE SHORELINE VIEWS ARE UNTITLED. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE CENTER RIGHT, WHERE THE USCS SEAL ETC. IS LOCATED IN THE 2ND EDITION. THERE IS NO DATA ON THE NEW PATAPSCO RIVER CHANNEL EXCAVATION BEING UNDERTAKEN WHEN THE 2ND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED. THE COMPASS ROSE IS ON TOP OF THE NAVIGATION COURSE ENTERING THE PATAPSCO.
