MAP #: 359U2
CARTOGRAPHER : U.S. COAST SURVEY
DATE: 1859
SHORT TITLE : CHESAPEAKE BAY SHEET NO. 4 FROM THE POTOMAC RIVER
REMAINING TITLE & ID : TO THE ENTRANCE TO POCOMOKE SOUND FROM A TRIGONOMETRICAL SURVEY UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A.D. BACHE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE SURVEY OF THE COAST OF THE UNITED STATES TRIANGULATION BY E. BLUNT AND S.A. GILBERT ASSISTANTS TOPOGRAPHY BY R.D. CUTTS J. SEIB I. HULL ADAMS ASSISTANTS AND S.A. WAINWRIGHT SUB-ASSISTANT HYDROGRAPHY BY THE PARTIES UNDER THE COMMAND OF LIEUTS. COMDG. S.P. LEE W.T. MUSE R. WAINWRIGHT J.J. ALMY & B.F. SANDS U.S.N. ASSTS. PUBLISHED IN 1859 SCALE 1/80,000 (BOTTOM LEFT CORNER). NOTES OR TABLES ON "SAILING DIRECTIONS", "LIGHT HOUSES", "LIGHT VESSELS", "TIDES", SOUNDINGS, AND DATES THAT THE WORK ON THE CHART WAS ACCOMPLISHED (TOP RIGHT CORNER). "ABBREVIATIONS IN THE BOTTOMS OF THIS MAP" (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). SCALES IN STATUTE MILES, YARDS, AND NAUTICAL MILES (BELOW TITLE). SYMBOL OF THE COAST SURVEY OFFICE (BELOW AND TO LEFT OF TITLE). THERE IS NO HEAVY NEAT LINE AT THE BOTTOM. THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH (BOTTOM BORDER). LATITUDE (RIGHT BORDER).
THE PRELIMINARY CHART THAT WAS THE FORERUNNER OF THIS ONE (SEE MAP # 359U1) WAS CHART #10 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1859, WASHINGTON: U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 1860. WE ARE NOT SURE OF THE DATE OF THE FINISHED CHART, ALTHOUGH IT BEARS AN 1859 DATE BECAUSE IT REFERS TO SOME OBSERVATIONS MADE IN DECEMBER, 1859. THE CHART IS CURIOUS IN THAT THE TOPOGRAPHY SOUTH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER IS COMPLETE BUT EVERYTHING NORTH OF THE RIVER IS MISSING. LATER COPIES IN THIS SERIES OF SIX CHARTS DIAGRAM THE SHEETS. THEY SHOW AN OVERLAP BETWEEN COAST CHART SHEETS # 33 AND # 34. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS CHART WAS A PROOF COPY OF THE FINISHED CHART WITH THE OVERLAPPED AREA DELETED FOR EASE OF PROOFING, SINCE THERE WAS NO VERIFICATION SIGNATURE OR LEGEND AND NO MARGINAL MARKINGS IN THE TOP MARGIN. AT ANY RATE, THIS CHART WAS NO LONGER LISTED AS PRELIMINARY IN THE TITLE AND THEREFORE PRESUMABLY WAS PUBLISHED LATER. IT IS SURPRISING, THOUGH, THAT W.T. MUSE IS LISTED IN THE TITLE AS LIEUT. COMMANDING, WHEREAS IN THE PRELIMINARY CHART HE IS LISTED WITH THE TITLE COMMANDER.
DATE IS FROM THE 1859 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND PHOTOCOPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS LIST SIX EDITIONS OF THIS CHART # 133 BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED BY CHARTS # 1223 AND 1224 AROUND JUNE, 1913, WHEN A PHOTOLITH WAS MADE.
ED. 1 - STATE 1 [?] - (1859) - THIS CHART HAS THE WORDS "PRELIMINARY CHART OF" BEFORE THE TITLE. IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT OF 1859. IT IS ON PLATE # 706. SEE CHART # 359U1.
- STATE 2 [?] - (1859) - THIS IS A COPY OF THE SAME CHART WITHOUT "PRELIMINARY..." IN THE TITLE, WITH TOPOGRAPHY COMPLETE BELOW THE POTOMAC RIVER, BUT NO DATA AT ALL NORTH OF THE RIVER. A COPY IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.
ED. 2 - (1866) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 1030. THE WORDS "PRELIMINARY CHART OF" IN THE TITLE OF THE PRIOR EDITION NOW READS "COAST CHART NO. 33 SHEET NO. 3 POTOMAC ENTRANCE TANGIER AND POCOMOKE SOUND." AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TITLE DATA IT READS "EDITION OF 1866". A DIAGRAM OF SHEETS OF THE CHART SERIES OF THE BAY IS ON THE CENTER LEFT SIDE. THE SHOAL AREAS ARE NOW SHADED RATHER THAN DOTTED LINES. SEE CHART # 366U7.
ED. 3 - (1872) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 1049.
ED. 4 - (1877) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 1915 IN AUGUST, 1877. APPARENTLY THE REVISION RELATED TO THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND.
ED. 5 - (1905) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 2923 IN MAY, 1905.
ED. 6 - (1907) - DATA WAS REVISED AND REISSUED FROM PLATE # 3000 IN SEPT., 1907.
THE CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY A COMBINATION OF CHARTS # 1223 AND 1224 AROUND JUNE, 1913 BY A CHART ENTITLED CHESAPEAKE BAY - WOLF TRAP TO SMITH'S POINT. IT WAS REPUBLISHED FREQUENTLY IN PHOTOLITH FORM. ON JULY 1, 1974 CHART # 1223 WAS CHANGED TO # 12225 WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CONVERTED TO A NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM. LORAN "C" LINES OF POSITION WERE ADDED IN THE DECEMBER 6, 1975 RELEASE. DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES AND REPRODUCTION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
