BACHE SUPERINTENDENT" (ABOVE TITLE). TABLE OF "NOTES" (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). ENGRAVING EXTENDS INTO TOP AND RIGHT MARGINS THROUGH THE NEAT LINES. THE SKETCH IS WIDER AT THE BOTTOM THAN AT THE TOP (57.4 CM. AT TOP AND 58.6 CM. AT BOTTOM). THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE WORK IN SECTION III WAS 75% COMPLETED AS OF THE END OF 1858. THE TRIANGULATION OF THE POTOMAC WAS CARRIED FROM THE ENTRANCE TO PINEY POINT, CONNECTING IT WITH THE TRIANGULATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND WAS EXTENDED ALSO BELOW THE PRIMARY LINES NEAR WASHINGTON, D.C. THE TRIANGULATION OF THE PATUXENT RIVER WAS COMPLETED TO NEAR NOTTINGHAM. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND NEAR AND SOUTH OF THE MARYLAND-VIRGINIA BOUNDARY LINE WAS COMPLETED. THAT OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND AND OF THE SHORES OF YORK RIVER, VIRGINIA WAS COMPLETED. HYDROGRAPHY WAS FINISHED IN FISHING BAY, NANTICOKE AND WICOMOCO RIVERS AND IN MONIC BAY AT THE HEAD OF TANGIER SOUND. TIDAL OBSERVATIONS AT OLD POINT COMFORT WERE CONTINUED. THE MAIN WORK REMAINING IN SECTION III WAS THE SURVEY OF THE POTOMAC AND THE TOPOGRAPHY OF PART OF THE BAY AS OF THE END OF 1858.
DURING 1858, SEVEN PARTIES WERE ACTIVE DURING PART OR ALL OF THE SURVEYING SEASON IN THIS SECTION, TWO IN TRIANGULATION, THREE IN TOPOGRAPHY, AND TWO IN HYDROGRAPHY.
THE FOLLOWING DRAWINGS WERE MADE: CHESAPEAKE BAY, FROM THE MAGOTHY TO HUDSON RIVER, MARYLAND AND YORK RIVER FROM THE ENTRANCE TO KING'S CREEK. THESE WERE IN PROGRESS: CHESAPEAKE BAY IN 4 SHEETS FROM HUDSON RIVER TO THE CAPES; RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER IN 2 SHEETS FROM OCCUPACIA CREEK TO THE MOUTH; YORK RIVER FROM KING'S CREEK TO WEST POINT; AND JAMES RIVER FROM RICHMOND TO CITY POINT.
THE ENGRAVING OF 3 SHEETS OF CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM THE HEAD TO THE POTOMAC RIVER WAS IN PROGRESS AND THE MAPS WERE TO BE ISSUED IN A PRELIMINARY FORM. THE ENGRAVING OF THE MAP OF THE PATAPSCO WAS CONTINUED. PRELIMINARY CHARTS OF HAMPTON ROADS AND ELIZABETH RIVER AND OF NORFOLK WERE ENGRAVED ON STONE.
DATA IS FROM THE 1858 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH THE LOWER HALF OF THE LEFT MARGIN CROPPED WITH MINOR LOSS OF THE HEAVY NEAT LINE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-648.
