DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS VIRGINIA, MARYLAND AND DELAWARE AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. ROADS, RAILROADS, ROAD DISTANCES IN MILES, COUNTY SEATS, STATE CAPITOLS AND MOUNTAINS ARE SHOWN. THE MAP DIVIDES VIRGINIA INTO COUNTIES, ALTHOUGH MARYLAND IS NOT SO SHOWN. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS DEPICTED WITHOUT SOUNDINGS OR SHOALS, BUT WITH THE BAY FILLED IN WITH SHORE CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES TO DENOTE WATER. AN INTERESTING FEATURE OF THIS MAP IS THE TABLE GIVING PRINCIPAL RAILROAD AND STAGE ROUTES THROUGH VIRGINIA, SHOWING MILES AND FREQUENCY OF SERVICE. THE INSET IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER SHOWS THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE REPRESENTATION OF MARYLAND IS TOO SMALL TO ADD ANYTHING TO THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE STATE AND HENCE IS OF MINOR IMPORTANCE TO A MD/CHESAPEAKE COLLECTION.

THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED IN S.A. MITCHELL'S A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS CONTAINING MAPS OF THE VARIOUS EMPIRES, KINGDOMS, STATES AND REPUBLICS OF THE WORLD..., PHILADELPHIA: CHARLES DESILVER, 1856 AS MAP # 17. THE MAP ALSO WAS INCLUDED IN THE 1857 AND 1858 EDITIONS, PUBLISHED BY CHARLES DESILVER AND WAS IN THE 1859 EDITION PUBLISHED BY CUSHING & BAILEY OF BALTIMORE. PHILLIPS ATLASES, # 6135 ON THIS LATTER VOLUME INDICATES THAT THE MAPS IN IT BEAR THE IMPRINT AND COPYRIGHT NOTICE OF CHARLES DESILVER.

IN MAY, 1845, MITCHELL ACQUIRED THE COPYRIGHT FOR TANNER'S NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS FROM CAREY & HART, WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED IT FROM TANNER. MITCHELL PUBLISHED TWO EDITIONS IN 1846. PLATE MARKS WERE MISSING IN THIS ATLAS AFTER MITCHELL ACQUIRED IT, INDICATING THAT THE IMAGES WERE TRANSFERRED TO LITHOGRAPHIC STONES. EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS WERE ISSUED PERIODICALLY UNTIL 1859. MITCHELL PUBLISHED THE ATLAS UNTIL 1850, WHEN THE COPYRIGHT WENT BY PURCHASE TO THOMAS, COWPERTHWAIT & CO. OF PHILADELPHIA. IN 1856 CHARLES DESILVER ACQUIRED THE ATLAS COPYRIGHT AND PUBLISHED IT IN 1856, 1857 AND 1858. THE 1859 EDITION STILL CARRIES DESILVER'S COPYRIGHT STATEMENT BUT WAS PUBLISHED BY CUSHINGS & BAILEY OF 362 MARKET STREET IN BALTIMORE. MANY OF THE MAPS WERE ATTRIBUTED TO J.H. YOUNG, WHO WAS A WELL KNOWN ENGRAVER OPERATING IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES, RISTOW AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE REPRODUCTION COPY OF THE MAP FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP WAS PUBLISHED FROM 1856 THROUGH 1859. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THE 1856, 1858 AND 1859 ISSUES AND DOES NOT KNOW WHETHER ANY VARIATIONS IN THE MAP OCCURRED.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY IN FULL SIZE. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-4.
