DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY LARGE SCALE HARBOR CHART OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, WAS INCLUDED AS ILLUSTRATION No. 24 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1857. IT SHOWS THE LOCATION AND SHAPE OF THE BUILDINGS AND DOCKS AND A LAYOUT OF THE STREETS OF NORFOLK, PORTSMOUTH AND GOSPORT. VERY LITTLE TOPOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION OTHER THAN THIS IS SHOWN.

THE NOAA COPPERPLATE RECORDS DO NOT INDICATE THAT A PLATE NUMBER WAS ASSIGNED TO THIS CHART OR THAT A FINISHED CHART BY THIS NAME WAS PUBLISHED. INSTEAD, THE INFORMATION WAS INCORPORATED INTO A CHART ENTITLED "HAMPTON ROADS AND ELIZABETH RIVER" ON PLATE 953, WHICH WAS COMMENCED SEPTEMBER, 1863 AND COMPLETED IN MAY, 1864. THIS WAS AN ORIGINAL PLATE. AN ALPHA PLATE WAS COMPLETED IN JANUARY, 1885, INCORPORATING CORRECTIONS TO APRIL 25, 1878 AND WITH AIDS TO NAVIGATION CORRECTED TO JUNE 16, 1879. THE CHART WAS CANCELLED IN APRIL, 1891.

THE CATALOGUE OF HYDROGRAPHIC MAPS, CHARTS AND SKETCHES PUBLISHED BY UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY; A. D. BACHE SUPERINTENDENT, 1866, WASHINGTON: GPO, 1866 SHOWS BOTH THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN AND THE "HAMPTON ROADS AND ELIZABETH RIVER" CHART AS AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME AT PRICES OF $0.20 EACH.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WRITER HAS SEEN ONLY THIS PRELIMINARY CHART. NOAA RECORDS DO NOT SHOW THAT A FINAL CHART BY THIS NAME WAS EVER PUBLISHED.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH THE RIGHT MARGIN CROPPED WITH LOSS OF MOST OF THE RIGHT NEAT LINE, EXCEPT AT THE VERY TOP. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-HF AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-627.
