CHART IS ORIENTED WITH NE AT THE TOP). LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH AND LATITUDE (TOP, LEFT AND RIGHT BORDERS).
AS OF 1857, MOST OF THE TRIANGULATION, THREE-FOURTHS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND FOUR-FIFTHS OF THE HYDROGRAPHY IN SECTION III, INCLUDING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, WAS COMPLETE. AS OF THE END OF 1857, TRIANGULATION OF THE YORK RIVER WAS COMPLETED FROM ITS MOUTH TO WEST POINT. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE RIVER WAS NEARLY FINISHED AND THE HYDROGRAPHY WAS EXECUTED FROM THE MOUTH TO WEST POINT. DRAWINGS ON SHEET TWO (UPPER PART OF THE YORK) HAD STARTED.
ADDITIONAL RELEASES ON OTHER PLATES OF THE CHART WERE MADE IN 1871, 1877 AND 1906. THE CHART LAST APPEARED IN A C. & G.S. CATALOG IN 1908.
DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS, FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 398 DETAILS FOUR DIFFERENT RELEASES OF THIS CHART. IN ADDITION TO THE PRELIMINARY CHART IN 1857, NEW VERSIONS WERE PUBLISHED IN 1871 AND 1877. THE 1877 EDITION WAS REISSUED AS ANOTHER PLATE IN 1906. THE COPPERPLATE RECORDS OF NOAA INDICATE THAT THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE (# 622) WAS COMMENCED IN OCTOBER, 1857 AND COMPLETED IN OCTOBER 1858. THAT PLATE WAS CONDEMNED JUNE 8, 1872. THE PLATE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY LOST. AN ALPHA PLATE (# 96) WAS MADE FROM THE ORIGINAL IN 1858 AND 5 BASSO PLATES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY DONE FROM THE ALPHA. THE FIRST FOUR OF THOSE PLATES WERE # 719 OF DECEMBER 14, 1858, # 836 OF SEPTEMBER 12, 1860, # 899 OF JULY, 1862 (PUBLISHED IN 1871), AND # 987 OF JUNE 15, 1864 TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE. THE TITLE WAS CUT OUT. SUBSEQUENT ISSUES FROM THIS PLATE CORRECTED AIDS TO NAVIGATION TO AUGUST 28, 1877. THE FIFTH AND FINAL BASSO PLATE WAS # 2594 OF APRIL 20, 1899. THIS PLATE WAS CONDEMNED BECAUSE OF DEFECTS. THE CHART WAS REISSUED FROM PLATE # 2964 IN 1906.
ED. 1 - (1857) - THIS IS THE PRELIMINARY CHART. IT WAS USED AS ILLUSTRATION No. 22 TO ACCOMPANY THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS FOR THE YEAR 1857. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.
ED. 2 - (1871) - THIS WAS ELECTROTYPE COPY NO. 3 FROM PLATE 899 [THE NOAA HISTORY CARD HAS A ? AFTER THIS NUMBER]. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS EDITION.
ED. 3 - STATE 1 - (1877) - THIS WAS ELECTROTYPE COPY NO. 4 FROM PLATE 987 ISSUED IN AUGUST, 1877. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS STATE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE 1857 PRELIMINARY EDITION ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS AND A HOLE AT THE FOLD INTERSECTION, WITH NO LOSS OF DATA. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC- 630. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS TWO COPIES OF THE 1906 STATE ON HEAVY PAPER PRINTED IN GREENISH-BLUE INK. THESE HUNTINGFIELD IMPRESSIONS WERE DONE AROUND 1970 FROM THE ORIGINAL PLATE # 2964 OF NOVEMBER, 1906. BOTH COPIES HAVE ACQ. #s OF NOAA012-GIFT AND THEIR MDHR #s ARE MSA SC1399-686 AND 687.
