DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY CHART SHOWS THE ENTRANCE TO THE YORK RIVER FROM THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. IT WAS THE FIRST OF TWO CHARTS COVERING THE NAVIGABLE PART OF THE RIVER. THE SECOND WAS RELEASED IN 1858 (SEE MAP # 358U6). THE CHART WAS NOT COMPLETED IN THE CREEKS AND RIVERS NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE YORK, WHERE THE SHORELINE AREA HAD NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY ENGRAVED. THE ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1858 INDICATES THAT THIS PRELIMINARY CHART WAS COMPLETED IN THAT YEAR AND THE SECOND SHEET WAS COMPLETED BY 1860. THIS FIRST SHEET OF THE ENTRANCE WAS USED AS ILLUSTRATION No. 22 TO ACCOMPANY THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS FOR THE YEAR 1857.

AS OF 1857, MOST OF THE TRIANGULATION, THREE-FOURTHS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND FOUR-FIFTHS OF THE HYDROGRAPHY IN SECTION III, INCLUDING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, WAS COMPLETE. AS OF THE END OF 1857, TRIANGULATION OF THE YORK RIVER WAS COMPLETED FROM ITS MOUTH TO WEST POINT. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE RIVER WAS NEARLY FINISHED AND THE HYDROGRAPHY WAS EXECUTED FROM THE MOUTH TO WEST POINT. DRAWINGS ON SHEET TWO (UPPER PART OF THE YORK) HAD STARTED.

ADDITIONAL RELEASES ON OTHER PLATES OF THE CHART WERE MADE IN 1871, 1877 AND 1906. THE CHART LAST APPEARED IN A C. & G.S. CATALOG IN 1908.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS, FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 398 DETAILS FOUR DIFFERENT RELEASES OF THIS CHART. IN ADDITION TO THE PRELIMINARY CHART IN 1857, NEW VERSIONS WERE PUBLISHED IN 1871 AND 1877. THE 1877 EDITION WAS REISSUED AS ANOTHER PLATE IN 1906. THE COPPERPLATE RECORDS OF NOAA INDICATE THAT THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE (# 622) WAS COMMENCED IN OCTOBER, 1857 AND COMPLETED IN OCTOBER 1858. THAT PLATE WAS CONDEMNED JUNE 8, 1872. THE PLATE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY LOST. AN ALPHA PLATE (# 96) WAS MADE FROM THE ORIGINAL IN 1858 AND 5 BASSO PLATES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY DONE FROM THE ALPHA. THE FIRST FOUR OF THOSE PLATES WERE # 719 OF DECEMBER 14, 1858, # 836 OF SEPTEMBER 12, 1860, # 899 OF JULY, 1862 (PUBLISHED IN 1871), AND # 987 OF JUNE 15, 1864 TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE. THE TITLE WAS CUT OUT. SUBSEQUENT ISSUES FROM THIS PLATE CORRECTED AIDS TO NAVIGATION TO AUGUST 28, 1877. THE FIFTH AND FINAL BASSO PLATE WAS # 2594 OF APRIL 20, 1899. THIS PLATE WAS CONDEMNED BECAUSE OF DEFECTS. THE CHART WAS REISSUED FROM PLATE # 2964 IN 1906.

ED. 1 - (1857) - THIS IS THE PRELIMINARY CHART. IT WAS USED AS ILLUSTRATION No. 22 TO ACCOMPANY THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS FOR THE YEAR 1857. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.
