DESCRIPTION : THIS EXTREMELY DETAILED SEA CHART IS SHEET 1 OF A 6 SHEET SERIES COVERING THE ENTIRE BAY. THIS SERIES REPRESENTS THE MOST COMPLETE CHARTING OF THE BAY IN TERMS OF HYDROGRAPHY AND TOPOGRAPHY DONE UP TO THE TIME OF ITS COMPLETION AND IS BASED ON EXTENSIVE TRIANGULATION OF THE WHOLE AREA, WHICH HAD NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE. IT GIVES TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA ON THE NECKS AND COASTAL LANDS ADJACENT TO THE NORTHERN PART OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM THE CHESTER RIVER TO THE LOWER SUSQUEHANNA RIVER. IT SHOWS LOCATION OF HOUSES AND BUILDINGS, TYPE TERRAIN, DIRECTION IN WHICH CROPS ARE PLANTED, FARM ROADS, RAILROADS, ETC. HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION INCLUDES SOUNDINGS IN FEET UP TO 18, THEN IN FATHOMS. IT HAS VERY WIDESPREAD INDICATIONS OF THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOM AND HAS SHOALS MARKED BY DOTTED LINES. BUOYS AND CHANNEL COURSES ARE DRAWN. IN SHORT, THIS CHART SUMMARIZES THE VERY BEST DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE ONGOING COAST SURVEY WORK AT THE TIME. SEVERAL OF THE SEA AND LAND AREAS ARE NOT COMPLETE, WHICH SHOWS THAT THE SURVEY OF THE AREA HAD NOT BEEN FINISHED AT THE TIME OF THE PUBLICATION OF THIS SHEET. THERE ARE EXTENSIVE SAILING DIRECTIONS AND TABLES OF HYDROGRAPHIC AND OTHER INFORMATION.

THE CHART IS CHART # 17 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1857, H.R. EX. DOC. NO. 21., 35th CONGRESS, 1st SESSION, WASHINGTON: U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 1858. IT IS AN UNFINISHED OR PRELIMINARY VERSION OF A CHART THAT WENT THROUGH FIVE EDITIONS, FOLLOWING THIS PRELIMINARY PUBLICATION. SEE THE EDITION AND STATE SECTION FOR MORE DETAILS OF THE LATER RELEASES.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1857, THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ACCORDING TO THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS, THERE WERE FIVE DIFFERENT PLATES FOR THIS CHART # 136 PRIOR TO ITS BEING SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 1226. EACH OF THE PLATES WAS REPRINTED MANY TIMES.

PRELIMINARY EDITION - (1857) - THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED. IT WAS UNFINISHED BUT RELEASED IN THE SUPERINTENDENT'S ANNUAL REPORT TO SHOW THE SURVEY PROGRESS. IT IS AVAILABLE ONLY ON THIN PAPER USED IN THAT REPORT.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1861) - THE DATE ON THE CHART IS 1861, BUT THE FIRST PUBLICATION WAS IN 1863. THE PLATE NUMBER OF THIS EDITION WAS # 1021. THE TITLE WAS ALTERED TO READ "COAST CHART NO. 31 CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM HEAD OF BAY TO MAGOTHY RIVER." THE DATE WAS CHANGED TO 1861. THE SCALES ARE NOW BELOW THE TITLE IN MILES, YARDS AND NAUTICAL MILES. DATES FOR THE EXECUTION OF THE WORK ARE BELOW THE SCALES. A DIAGRAM OF SHEETS IS ADDED AT THE LEFT CENTER. MARGINAL WRITING IS ADDED, AS IS COMPLETED TOPOGRAPHY. THE NOTES IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT ARE REARRANGED TO A SINGLE COLUMN. THE SHOAL AREAS ARE NOW DEPICTED BY SHADING. SEE CHART # 361U7.

- STATE 2 - (1872) - THE DATA WAS REVISED AND UPDATED AND THE SAME PLATE NUMBER WAS USED IN THIS RERELEASE.

ED. 2 - (1877) - THIS EDITION WAS ISSUED IN JUNE, 1877. THE PLATE NUMBER WAS # 1235.

ED. 3 - (1897) - THIS EDITION WAS ISSUED IN DECEMBER, 1897. THE PLATE NUMBER WAS # 2497.

THIS CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 1226, WHICH WAS FIRST ISSUED IN JUNE, 1913 AS PLATE # 3358. THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO CHESAPEAKE BAY - SANDY POINT TO HEAD OF BAY, BUT THE SCALE REMAINED 1-80,000. THE PLATE WAS BEGUN ON 5/21/12 AND FINISHED ON 6/18/13. THE ENGRAVING WAS NOT AN ORIGINAL PLATE BUT A BASSO MADE FROM PLATE # 2797. NUMEROUS REISSUES WERE MADE THROUGH 8/20/20.

SUBSEQUENT PLATES WERE DONE ON APRIL 28, 1921 (PLATE # 3690) AND MARCH 1, 1934 (PLATE # 4210-11-12-13). THE LATTER WAS REVISED AND REISSUED MANY TIMES.
