MANY COASTAL SURVEYS WERE DONE BY THE ARMY PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE START OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY FOR COASTAL DEFENSE PURPOSES. IN 1838 THE TOPOGRAPHICAL BUREAU OF ARMY OFFICERS WITH SURVEYING SKILLS WAS EXPANDED INTO THE CORP OF TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS. THE CORP WAS DISCONTINUED AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. GUTHORN SAYS, "THE GREATER NUMBER OF THESE SURVEYS HAD BEEN CARRIED OUT IN RESPONSE TO REQUESTS BY THE CONGRESS, POSSIBLY STIMULATED BY INFLUENTIAL LOCAL CITIZENS OR BY GROUPS WITHIN THE ARMY WHO WERE MAKING SPECIAL DEFENSE STUDIES. OCCASIONALLY, THE UNDERLYING REASONS ARE NOT EVIDENT...THERE WERE OFTEN CONSIDERABLE INTERVALS BETWEEN THE DATE OF SURVEY AND THE EXECUTION OF PRINTING... AS WITH OFFICERS OF THE NAVY, THOSE OF THE ARMY WERE TO MAKE THEIR MOST EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTION TO COASTAL CHARTING WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE COAST SURVEY."
DATA IS FROM GUTHORN AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE REPRODUCTION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE SURVEYS FOR THIS 1857 MAP WERE MADE IN 1824 BY TWO OFFICERS OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS. HOWEVER, THE SURVEY APPARENTLY WAS NEVER PUBLISHED PRIOR TO THIS EDITION. ONLY THIS ONE EDITION IS KNOWN TO THE WRITER.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A FULL SIZE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-403 (REPRO).
