SCALE OF MILES (BELOW TITLE). POPULATION TABLE BASED ON 1850 CENSUS (LEFT BOTTOM CORNER, MEASURING 10.7 X 8.3 CM.). "15." (BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN). "ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS IN THE YEAR 1856 BY CHARLES DESILVER IN THE CLERKS OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF PENNSYLVANIA" (LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN). ELABORATE SCROLLED BORDER WITH NO OUTSIDE NEAT LINE. TABLE OF STEAMBOAT ROUTE MILEAGE FROM BALTIMORE TO NORFOLK, BALTIMORE TO PHILADELPHIA, AND BALTIMORE TO WASHINGTON AND INTERMEDIATE POINTS (TABLE ORIENTED FROM EAST TO WEST AT THE TOP HALF OF THE MAP). THE MAP EXTENDS THROUGH THE LATITUDE BORDERS ON THE RIGHT AND LEFT SIDES. LONGITUDE EAST AND WEST FROM WASHINGTON, D.C. (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS OF 1857, IN WHICH THIS VERSION OF THE MAP FIRST APPEARED, CONTAINED 145 MAPS, UP FROM THE 122 IN THE 1853 EDITION. ANOTHER EDITION OF THE ATLAS WAS PUT OUT IN 1858 BY DESILVER. THE FINAL EDITION, ALSO WITH 145 MAPS, WAS PUBLISHED BY CUSHINGS & BAILEY OF 362 MARKET ST. IN BALTIMORE IN 1859, BUT IT STILL CARRIED THE DESILVER COPYRIGHT. THIS BROUGHT TO AN END AN ATLAS WHICH HAD BEEN PUBLISHED FROM 1836 BY AT LEAST SEVEN DIFFERENT PUBLISHING COMPANIES.
TANNER'S ORIGINAL MAP WAS DONE TO SATISFY A GROWING DEMAND FOR ACCURATE MAPS TO SHOW THE RAPID IMPROVEMENT IN COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORTATION IN THE UNITED STATES THAT OCCURRED FROM 1820 TO 1840. CANALS AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION WERE EXPANDING SUBSTANTIALLY. SEE MAP # 333T5 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS VERY POPULAR AND OFTEN PUBLISHED MAP.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS KNOWN IN AT LEAST TWO EDITIONS, EACH WITH SEVERAL STATES. THERE ARE SO MANY ISSUANCES AND STATES OF THE MAP THAT IT IS CERTAIN THAT WE HAVE NOT LISTED ALL OF THEM.
ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1833) - THIS MAP WAS IN THE FIRST FOLIO RELEASED IN 1833 OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: H.S. TANNER, AS MAP # 12. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A SEPARATE. SEE MAP # 333T5.
- STATE 2 - (1836) - THIS STATE IS THE SAME AS THE FIRST STATE EXCEPT THAT "1836" IS SUBSTITUTED IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN IMPRINT. THE MAP WAS IN THE 1836 EDITION OF THE SAME ATLAS. SEE MAP # 336T5.
- ANOTHER STATE - (1841) - THIS IS PROBABLY A REISSUE OF STATE 2 IN A GEOGRAPHICAL, HISTORICAL AND STATISTICAL VIEW OF THE CENTRAL OR MIDDLE UNITED STATES, PHILADELPHIA: 1841, ON PAGE 295. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS ISSUE AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE SURE OF ITS DISTINGUISHING FEATURES.
- ANOTHER STATE - (1841) - THIS STATE WAS IN THE SAME ATLAS AS THE OTHER 1841 STATE, PUBLISHED BY CAREY AND HART. WHETHER THE CAREY AND HART LEGEND REPLACES THAT OF H.S. TANNER IS UNKNOWN. THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY THE WRITER.
- ANOTHER STATE - (1842-3) - THIS STATE WAS CONTAINED IN A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS..., PHILADELPHIA, CAREY AND HART AS MAP # 12. THE IMPRINT READS "ENTERED...CONGRESS". "PUBLISHED BY CAREY & HART" IS IN THE BOTTOM CENTER MARGIN AND THE ENGRAVER AND PAGE NUMBER ARE UNCHANGED. SEE MAP # 342T5.
