DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS SEEN AT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF TALBOT COUNTY IN EASTON, MARYLAND IN THE COLLECTION OF DR. LAURENCE CLAGGETT. THE COPY OBSERVED WAS ISSUED AS A SEPARATE AND WAS ATTACHED TO TITLED MAP BOARDS. IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THIS WAS INCLUDED IN ANY ATLAS, BUT THE LACK OF THE PAGE NUMBER SUGGESTS OTHERWISE. THE MAP SHOWS MAIN ROADS, RAILROADS, CANALS, COUNTY SEATS, CITIES AND TOWNS. THE INSET OF WASHINGTON, D.C. LOCATES COLLEGES AND GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS AND SHOWS A LAYOUT OF THE STREETS IN THE CAPITAL AND FOR GEORGETOWN. THERE ARE NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER AND CLOSE OCEAN AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. SEVERAL OTHER STATES AND/OR EDITIONS OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN TO THE WRITER AT THIS TIME. SEE EDITION AND STATE INFORMATION SECTION FOR MAP REFERENCES. J. H. COLTON & CO. WAS, ACCORDING TO RISTOW, PROBABLY FOUNDED BY JOSEPH HUTCHINS COLTER IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1831. THE EARLIEST IMPRINTS OF THE FIRM ARE DATED 1833. COLTON WAS BORN IN 1800 IN LONGMEADOW, MASS. HE HAD LITTLE FORMAL EDUCATION OR TRAINING IN GEOGRAPHY OR CARTOGRAPHY AND HIS PRINCIPAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE SUCCESS OF THE FIRM WAS IN ADMINISTRATION, MANAGEMENT AND DISTRIBUTION. FOR THE FIRST 10 OR 15 YEARS OF OPERATION, COLTON PURCHASED COPYRIGHTS OF MAPS PREPARED BY OTHERS. IN 1855, THE FIRST VOLUME OF COLTON'S ATLAS OF THE WORLD ILLUSTRATING PHYSICAL AND RAILROAD GEOGRAPHY... WAS RELEASED. SINCE THERE WERE NO PLATE MARKS, THE ENGRAVED MAPS WERE PROBABLY TRANSFERRED TO LITHOGRAPHIC STONES. COLOR WAS MANUALLY APPLIED. VOLUME 2 WAS PUBLISHED IN 1856, COVERING EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA, OCEANIA, ETC. THE ATLAS OF THE WORLD WAS DISCONTINUED AFTER TWO EDITIONS, POSSIBLY BECAUSE OF ITS HIGH PRICE, AND WAS REPLACED IN 1857 BY COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS IN ONE VOLUME, WITH THE MAPS DONE ON STEEL PLATES. MOST OF THE MAPS IN THE GENERAL ATLAS DUPLICATE THOSE IN THE EARLIER ATLAS OF THE WORLD, BUT DO NOT HAVE DECORATIVE BORDERS IN ORDER TO REDUCE THEIR SIZE, UNTIL THE 1860 EDITION. DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, AND RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
