BEST INFO SOURCE : THE MANUSCRIPT CHART AND COPPERPLATE RECORDS OF NOAA AND THE 1855 USCS ANNUAL REPORT ARE THE BEST FOUND.
DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY CHART IS THE SECOND OF TWO SHEETS OF THE JAMES RIVER FROM ITS ENTRANCE TO RICHMOND. THE CHART OF THE ENTRANCE TO JAMES RIVER WAS NOT DONE UNTIL SEVERAL YEARS LATER. THIS UPPER SHEET WAS INCLUDED AS ILLUSTRATION No. 13 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1855.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ALTHOUGH DATED 1855, THE NOAA COPPERPLATE RECORDS SHOW THAT THE ORIGINAL PLATE FOR THIS CHART WAS PLATE # 525, WHICH WAS BEGUN IN JUNE, 1856 AND COMPLETED IN NOVEMBER, 1856. AN ALPHA PLATE # 426 WAS COMPLETED ON DECEMBER 14, 1872 FROM THE ORIGINAL AND A BASSO PLATE # 1213 WAS DONE FROM THE ALPHA ON JANUARY 20, 1873. THAT PLATE WAS CORRECTED UP TO THE DATE OF ITS COMPLETION. THE CATALOGS FROM 1872 TO 1877 LIST THE EDITION OF 1871, WHICH PRESUMABLY WAS THE DATE GIVEN ON PLATE # 426. BY 1880, THIS CHART HAD BEEN SUPERSEDED. IN 1882, CHARTS 402A & B COVERED THIS SAME AREA AND IN JANUARY, 1912, CHART # 529 ENTITLED "JAMES RIVER - NEWPORT NEWS TO JAMESTOWN ISLAND" SUPERSEDED THE PRIOR CHARTS. EDITION 10 OF MARCH, 1953 WAS COMPLETELY RECONSTRUCTED FROM RECENT HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYS BY THE CORP OF ENGINEERS. SYMBOLS WERE MODERNIZED AND CHANGED MADE FOR BETTER LEGIBILITY. THE NUMBER OF THE CHART WAS CHANGED WITH THE PUBLICATION OF EDITION 20 TO 12248. THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM WAS ADDED WITH EDITION 29 OF AUGUST 4, 1990.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS CHART ON THIN PAPER WITH BOTH BROWNING AND SOME SEPARATION AT THE FOLDS. THE LOWER LEFT FOLD AT PETERSBURG IS SEPARATED 1 1/2" INTO THE CHART FROM THE NEAT LINE. THE LEFT MARGIN IS CLOSE CROPPED AT TOP AND BOTTOM WITH PARTIAL LOSS OF THE NEAT LINE AT THE TOP. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHU AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-626.
