THE SKETCH IS WIDER BETWEEN THE NEAT LINES AT THE BOTTOM THAN AT THE TOP (56.4 CM AT TOP AND 57.8 CM AT BOTTOM). INSETS OF THE UPPER REACHES OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER (CENTER LEFT) AND OF THE UPPER REACHES OF THE JAMES RIVER (LEFT OF TITLE) ARE SHOWN. THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
DURING 1853, THE MAIN TRIANGULATION OF THE BAY HAD BEEN COMPLETED TO THE CAPES. SECONDARY TRIANGULATION WAS NEARLY COMPLETE, THAT OF THE JAMES RIVER FROM RICHMOND TO HARRISON'S BAR NEARLY SO, THAT OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK HAD BEEN DONE FROM FREDERICKSBURG TO PORT ROYAL AND WAS IN PROGRESS. TELEGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS FOR DIFFERENCES OF LONGITUDE WERE MADE AT WASHINGTON FOR THE CONNECTION WITH RALEIGH AND CHARLESTON. A LINE OF THE OUTER COAST TRIANGULATION WAS MEASURED AND AN AZIMUTH DETERMINED FOR VERIFICATION. MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE IN CONNECTION WITH THE AZIMUTH STATION. THE TOPOGRAPHY WORK WAS CONTINUED DURING THE YEAR 1853 ALONG THE OCEAN SHORES OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA, THAT OF THE CHESAPEAKE WAS CONTINUED IN THE JAMES AND RAPPAHANNOCK AND VERIFICATION WORK ON THE PATAPSCO WAS NEARLY COMPLETE. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE OUTER COAST OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA WAS COMPLETED TO CAPE CHARLES, THAT OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE BAY INCLUDING BOTH CAPES WAS NEARLY FINISHED AND THAT OF THE BAY NEAR THE ENTRANCE WAS PROGRESSING. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE JAMES RIVER FROM RICHMOND TO HARRISON'S BAR HAD BEEN COMPLETED AND OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK WAS IN PROGRESS.
A TOTAL OF 12 PARTIES WERE ENGAGED IN SECTION III DURING THE SEASON. ONE WAS DOING ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS, ONE IN PRIMARY AND PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION, THREE IN SECONDARY TRIANGULATION, FOUR IN TOPOGRAPHY AND TWO IN HYDROGRAPHY.
CHARTS WERE PUBLISHED IN 1853 OF THE SEACOAST OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA AND SKETCHES OF CAPE CHARLES AND VICINITY, OF WATCHAPRIGUE, AND CHERRYSTONE INLETS AND OF HOG ISLAND HARBOR, VIRGINIA. CHARTS WERE IN PROGRESS OF CHESAPEAKE BAY, NOS. 1,2, AND 3, PATAPSCO RIVER, APPOMATTOX RIVER, AND PART OF JAMES RIVER. A MANUSCRIPT MAP OF THE APPOMATTOX FOR THE CITY OF PETERSBURG WAS NEARLY COMPLETED.
DATA IS FROM THE 1853 USCS ANNUAL REPORT AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THIS CHART IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS THREE COPIES IN GOOD CONDITION ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. ONE HAS AN ACQ. # OF A016-HDU AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-286. A SECOND HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-DUD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-296. THE THIRD HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-HH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-462.
