"U.S. COAST SURVEY A.D. BACHE SUPERINTENDENT" (ABOVE TITLE). UNTITLED TABLE OF ABBREVIATIONS, SYMBOLS AND LINES (ABOVE TITLE). ENGRAVING EXTENDS INTO TOP, BOTTOM AND RIGHT MARGINS THROUGH THE NEAT LINES. THE SKETCH IS WIDER AT THE BOTTOM THAN AT THE TOP (56 CM. AT TOP AND 57 CM. AT BOTTOM). THERE IS AN INSET OF THE UPPER REACHES OF THE JAMES RIVER (LEFT OF THE TITLE). THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
DURING 1852, ELEVEN PARTIES WORKED ON THIS SECTION OF THE SURVEY. NINE WERE ON LAND WORK AND TWO ON HYDROGRAPHY. ONE OF THE HYDROGRAPHIC PARTIES USED A STEAM VESSEL AND THE OTHER A SAILING VESSEL. THE LONGITUDE OF PETERSBURG FROM WASHINGTON WAS DETERMINED BY TELEGRAPH, THE LATITUDE OBTAINED AND AN AZIMUTH GIVEN FOR THE WORK ON THE JAMES AND APPOMATTOX RIVERS. THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE WAS COMPLETED WITHIN PART OF A SEASON'S WORK. THE SECONDARY TRIANGULATION WAS CONTINUED AND THAT OF THE OUTER COAST WAS EXTENDED TO CONNECT AT THE CAPES WITH THE MAIN WORK. THE TRIANGULATION OF THE APPOMATTOX RIVER WAS MADE AND THAT OF THE JAMES COMMENCED. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SHORES OF THE CHESAPEAKE AREA WERE EXTENDED SOUTH AND THAT OF THE OUTER COAST WAS EXTENDED TO THE LIMITS OF THE SHORE-LINE REQUIRED BY THE HYDROGRAPHIC PARTY, THAT OF THE APPOMATTOX RIVER WAS NEARLY COMPLETED AND THE VERIFICATION OF THAT OF THE PATAPSCO AND ITS VICINITY WAS CONTINUED. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE OCEAN COAST WAS EXTENDED TO MATCHIPUNGO INLET, 17 MILES FROM CAPE HENRY, THAT OF THE CHESAPEAKE NEAR THE CAPES WAS EXTENDED NORTH ALONG THE EASTERN SHORE. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE MIDDLE GROUND, DONE IN 1851, WAS CONNECTED. AN EXAMINATION OF FISHERMAN'S BAY AND ITS APPROACHES WAS MADE. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE APPOMATTOX RIVER WAS COMPLETED. A RECONNAISSANCE OF HARRISON'S BAR IN JAMES RIVER WAS MADE. THE BELVEDERE SHOAL AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PATAPSCO AND THE PLACE OF A WRECK IN HOOPER'S STRAIT WAS DETERMINED AND MARKED. THE SITE OF A LIGHTHOUSE ON SEVEN-FOOT KNOLL, PATAPSCO ENTRANCE, WAS DESIGNATED. AN EXAMINATION FOR A LIGHT HOUSE AT PONGOTEAGUE CREEK, NEAR POCOMOKE SOUND WAS MADE. TIDAL OBSERVATIONS AT OLD POINT COMFORT WERE CONTINUED AND A SELF REGISTERING GAUGE PLACED THERE.
THE FOLLOWING MAPS AND CHARTS WERE PUBLISHED OR WERE IN PROGRESS: CHINCOTEAGUE SHOAL, FISHING OF DONOHO'S BATTERY, ENTRANCE TO CHESAPEAKE BAY, CHESAPEAKE BAY SHEETS 1,2, AND 3, PATAPSCO RIVER, APPOMATTOX RIVER AND THE SEACOAST OF DELAWARE AND MARYLAND.
DATA IS FROM THE 1852 USCS ANNUAL REPORT AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.
