MAP # 352U4 IS ON HEAVY PAPER, LINEN BACKED, SO IT WAS PROBABLY USED FOR NAVIGATION, WHEREAS THE ONE DESCRIBED HEREIN ACCOMPANIED AND ILLUSTRATED THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY IN 1852.
EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO STATES OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN TO THE WRITER, ALTHOUGH OTHERS MAY WELL ALSO EXIST. THE SEQUENCE OF THESE STATES IS NOT CERTAIN. THE COPPER PLATE RECORDS OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY INDICATE THAT THE ORIGINAL PLATE OF THIS CHART WAS COMMENCED IN JULY, 1850 AND WAS FINALLY COMPLETED IN JULY, 1854. IT WAS PLATE # 268. THIS IS THE ONLY ENTRY FOR A CHART OF THIS NAME IN THE SURVIVING PLATE RECORDS. THUS, THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS A PRELIMINARY PRINTING. THE CHART RECORDS OF THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION INDICATE AN ENTRY DATED 1852 FOR ONE WITH THIS TITLE AND A SCALE OF 1:200,000, WITH THE INDICATION THAT IT IS ELECTROTYPE COPY NO. 1. THIS LISTING IS UNDER THE HEADING OF CHART # 376. SINCE THIS AND THREE OTHER CHARTS ON THAT RECORD ARE NOT GIVEN EDITION NUMBERS, THE INFORMATION FROM THESE MUST HAVE BEEN INTEGRATED INTO CHART 376 ENTITLED "PRELIMINARY CHART OF DELAWARE & CHESAPEAKE BAYS & THE SEA COAST FROM CAPE HENLOPEN TO CAPE CHARLES" ON A SCALE OF 1:400,000. THE FIRST EDITION OF THAT CHART WAS ISSUED IN 1855 ON PLATE # 453. EDITION 2 IN 1882 CONTAINED THE TITLE "GENERAL CHART OF DELAWARE & CHESAPEAKE BAYS AND THE SEACOAST FROM CAPE MAY TO CAPE HENLOPEN", ALSO ON A SCALE OF 1:400,000. THE THIRD EDITION IN 1892 CARRIED THE TITLE "DELAWARE & CHESAPEAKE BAYS" ON A 1:400,000 SCALE. THE CHART WAS LISTED AS OBSOLETE AND NOT FOR USE IN NAVIGATION AFTER EDITION 6, DATED JULY, 1915.
THE PRELIMINARY CHART, DESCRIBED HEREIN, WAS LISTED AS BEING ENGRAVED IN APPENDIX 6, PAGE 83, # 12 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF 1852. THE 1853 REPORT SHOWS ON PAGE 62* THAT 520 COPIES HAD BEEN PRINTED OF THE CHART FROM NOVEMBER 1, 1852 THROUGH 1853. PAGE 64* OF THAT SAME REPORT INDICATES THAT 55 COPIES HAD BEEN DISTRIBUTED IN 1853, 26 FOR SALE, 11 FOR OFFICE USE, AND 18 GIVEN GRATUITOUSLY.
THE REPORT OF THE HISTORY AND PROGRESS OF THE AMERICAN COAST SURVEY UP TO THE YEAR 1858 LISTS THE 1852 "SEA-COAST OF DELAWARE MARYLAND AND PART OF VIRGINIA, PRELIMINARY CHART" ON A 1:200,000 SCALE AS WELL AS THE "DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS AND SEA-COAST, PRELIMINARY CHART", WITH AN 1855 DATE AND A 1:400,000 SCALE IN ITS LISTING OF PUBLISHED PRELIMINARY CHARTS. THOSE CHARTS ARE BOTH IN THE CATALOGUE OF HYDROGRAPHIC MAPS, CHARTS AND SKETCHES PUBLISHED BY THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY, 1866, STILL AS PRELIMINARY.
STATE 1 - (1852) - IS ON THIN PAPER AND WAS USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1852. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.
STATE 2 - (1852) - IT IS ON HEAVY PAPER, BACKED WITH CONTEMPORARY LINEN AND IS PROBABLY THE CHART ACTUALLY USED FOR NAVIGATION. SEE MAP # 352U4.
ANY OTHER STATES HAVE NOT BEEN RESEARCHED.
