DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP, ISSUED IN BLACK AND WHITE, OF THE RAILROADS IN MARYLAND AND DELAWARE AND PART OF PENNSYLVANIA AND VIRGINIA WAS PUBLISHED AS A SEPARATE BY FIELDING LUCAS JR. IN 1852, TWO YEARS PRIOR TO HIS DEATH. THE MAP ALSO SHOWS MAIN AND SECONDARY ROADS AND GIVES ROAD DISTANCES. LUCAS HAD AN INTEREST IN RAILROADS SINCE HE WAS A DIRECTOR OF THE BALTIMORE & OHIO RAILROAD FROM 1835 TO 1854. NO REFERENCE HAS BEEN FOUND TO THIS MAP IN THE STANDARD LITERATURE. IT IS NOT LISTED IN EITHER PHILLIPS OR IN MATHEWS. IT WAS ENGRAVED BY J. YEAGER OF PHILADELPHIA.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THIS MAP IS KNOWN TO THE WRITER.

IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DHN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-120. WRITER HAS SEEN A COLORED COPY IN THE LAURENCE CLAGGETT COLLECTION OF EASTON, MD. ATTACHED TO A BROWN MAP COVER 13.0 X 8.3 CM. THE COVER HAS THE TITLE "MAP OF MARYLAND. F. LUCAS, JR." IN GOLD LEAF ON THE FRONT OUTSIDE COVER. THE INSIDE OF THE COVER CONTAINS A TABLE GIVING COUNTIES, SEATS OF JUSTICE, AREA, POPULATION DIVIDED INTO WHITE AND COLOR AND FURTHER INTO MALE AND FEMALE FOR THE WHITE POPULATION AND FREE AND SLAVE FOR COLORED. FINALLY, TOTAL POPULATION AND NUMBER OF FAMILIES, ALL BASED ON THE 1850 CENSUS OF MARYLAND. THE MAP APPEARS IDENTICAL TO THE HUNTINGFIELD COPY EXCEPT FOR BEING IN COLOR.
