ADVERTISEMENT (PLAIN OVAL CARTOUCHE IN BOTTOM LEFT CORNER) READS "J.H. COLTON'S GEOGRAPHICAL ESTABLISHMENT No. 172 WILLIAM ST. NEW YORK. FOR MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS THE LARGEST PUBLISHER OF MAPS & ATLASES IN AMERICA, MR. COLTON'S ASSORTMENT AMERICAN & FOREIGN - FOR SCHOOLS, OFFICES, LIBRARIES, TRAVELERS &c, IN THEIR VARIOUS STYLES, IS NOW FULL AND COMPLETE. TRAVELING AGENTS SUPPLIED WITH THE MOST POPULAR CANVASSING WORKS IN THIS LINE." DECORATIVE BORDER (1.5 CM. WIDE ON TWO SIDES AND THE BOTTOM). LONGITUDE WEST FROM WASHINGTON (BOTTOM BORDER). LATTITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE MAP SHOWS CANALS, RAILROADS, TOWNS, CITIES AND COUNTY DIVISIONS. NO SOUNDINGS OR BOTTOM CONDITIONS ARE INDICATED. LINES THAT PARALLEL THE SHORELINE ARE ENGRAVED IN ALL EXCEPT THE WIDEST PART OF THE BAY. THE MAP WAS PRINTED IN NEW YORK BY LANG & COOPER.
DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE PHOTOCOPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS PHOTOCOPIES OF TWO ISSUES FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, ONE IN 1852 AND ONE IN 1855. THE MAP APPEARS TO BE AN EDITION OF A LARGER MAP TRUNCATED ON THE EAST AND WEST, SINCE PLACE NAMES ARE CUT AND INCOMPLETE. THE ORIGINAL MAP HAS NOT YET BEEN IDENTIFIED.
1852 ISSUE - THIS IS THE ISSUE DESCRIBED HEREIN.
1855 ISSUE - THIS ISSUE HAS A MODIFIED OVAL FOR THE ADVERTISEMENT. IT HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO A FLAT BOTTOM WITH A "SCALE OF STATUTE MILES 12 TO ONE INCH" BENEATH THE AD. THE IMPRINT IS CHANGED TO "...1855..." MINOR CHANGES IN THE MAP ITSELF OCCURRED, INCLUDING SHOWING PHILADELPHIA EXTENDING THROUGH THE BORDER IN THE TOP RIGHT. WHILE THE DECORATIVE BORDER IS OF SIMILAR DESIGN, IT IS NOT IDENTICAL. THE WORD "THE" IS DELETED BEFORE THE WORD "SEAT" IN THE TITLE.
