DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ADJACENT AREA WAS ISSUED TO ILLUSTRATE THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY, SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THAT WORK DURING THE YEAR ENDING NOVEMBER, 1851. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. IT SHOWS THE LIMITS OF THE TOPOGRAPHIC AND HYDROGRAPHIC SHEETS AND THE DATES OF THEIR COMPLETION, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT, BUT NOT PUBLISHED AND ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC. IT GIVES THE TIDAL, ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC AND CURRENT STATIONS. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THESE PROGRESS SKETCHES, THE SOUTHERN PART OF "MASON & DIXON'S LINE" IS DRAWN IN. THIS IS ALSO THE FIRST PROGRESS CHART TO HAVE LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE LINES INCLUDED.

DURING 1851, TEN PARTIES WERE AT WORK IN SECTION 3. ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE AT TWO STATIONS FOR LATITUDE AND AZIMUTH, COMPLETING THE PRIMARY AND ASTRONOMICAL WORK BETWEEN THE WASHINGTON OBSERVATORY, CAPITOL, AND THE CHESAPEAKE BASE. THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATIONS WERE EXTENDED DOWN THE CHESAPEAKE, AND PRELIMINARY DETERMINATIONS MADE TO THE CAPES. THE SECONDARY TRIANGULATION IN THE BAY ADVANCED WITH THE PRIMARY, AND THAT OF THE SEACOAST WAS CARRIED TO WITHIN TWENTY MILES OF CAPE CHARLES. NEXT SEASON, THE REPORT PREDICTED, THE OUTSIDE AND BAY TRIANGULATIONS WOULD BE CONNECTED AND THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION PROBABLY COMPLETED. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF BOTH CHESAPEAKE SHORES ADVANCED 48 MILES; THE EASTERN SHORE TO ROSE MARY STATION AND THE WESTERN TO WOLF TRAP. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE OUTSIDE REACHED SOUTH GARGATHY. THE VERIFICATION WORK OF TOPOGRAPHY IN THE PATAPSCO AND APPROACHES AND ON THE EASTERN SHORE WAS CONTINUED. THE OUTSIDE HYDROGRAPHY WAS EXTENDED 26 MILES TO SOUTH GARGATHY AND THAT INSIDE THE BAY WENT FROM WINDMILL POINT TO WOLF TRAP AND THE MIDDLE GROUND AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE BAY WAS SOUNDED OVER. TIDAL OBSERVATIONS WERE CONTINUED AT OLD POINT COMFORT. REPORTS WERE MADE ON LIGHT-HOUSES AT FISHING BATTERY AND THE BODKIN SHOAL.

THE MAP OF BALTIMORE HARBOR AND THE PATAPSCO AND THE UPPER SHEET OF THE CHESAPEAKE WERE STILL IN THE HANDS OF THE ENGRAVER. THE DRAWINGS OF THE SECOND SHEET OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND OF THE OUTER COAST WERE STARTED. THE PRELIMINARY CHART OF THE SEACOAST OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA WAS EXTENDED SOUTHWARD SO AS TO GIVE THE CHINCOTEAGUE SHOALS, EMPLOYING THE ELECTROTYPE PROCESS TO MAKE THE ADDITIONS WITHOUT LOSS OF THE ORIGINAL PLATE. A SKETCH OF THE MIDDLE GROUND AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE WAS PREPARED AND PUBLISHED.

DATA IS FROM THE 1851 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SLIGHT BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. LEFT SIDE IS CLOSE CROPPED, WITH LOSS OF PART OF NEAT LINE. THERE IS A SMALL TEAR AT THE CENTER LEFT MARGIN. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF J017-DDT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-290. A SECOND COPY IS BROWNED AT THE FOLDS AND HAS SOME LOSS OF INFORMATION JUST NORTH OF THE CHOPTANK RIVER AT THE FOLD. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-463. IN ADDITION, THE COLLECTION HAS A FULL SIZE PHOTOCOPY OF THE COPY IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-398(REPRO).
