DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH COVERS THE ENTRANCE OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM CAPE HENRY TO CAPE CHARLES AND SHOWS DETAILED SOUNDINGS AND BOTTOM CONDITIONS AS WELL AS NAVIGATIONAL LIGHTS. MAGNETIC VARIATION IS INDICATED. ONE INTERESTING FEATURE IS THE PRESENCE OF BOTTOM CONTOUR LINES. THE DIRECTION AND SPEED OF EBB AND FLOOD TIDE ARE SHOWN JUST EAST OF MIDDLE GROUND AND JUST SOUTH OF NORTH CHANNEL. THIS CHART WAS INCLUDED IN THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING 1851. THE USCS PLATE HISTORY FILE INDICATES THAT THE ONLY PLATE DONE ON THIS SKETCH WAS THE ORIGINAL PLATE # 63, WHICH WAS BEGUN IN DECEMBER, 1851 AND FINISHED IN MARCH, 1852.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE WAS ONLY A SINGLE EDITION OF THIS SKETCH PUBLISHED, AND IT WAS IN THE 1851 USCS ANNUAL REPORT, PUBLISHED IN 1852. THIS INFORMATION IS TAKEN FROM THE PLATE HISTORY RECORDS FILE OF THE USCS. THE DATA IN THIS RECONNOISSANCE CHART WAS INCORPORATED INTO CHART 131 IN 1863.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS TWO COPIES OF THIS SKETCH AND ONE FULL SCALE REPRODUCTION. IT HAS A COPY ON HEAVY PAPER WITH EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THIS MAY BE A 20TH CENTURY PRINTING FROM THE ORIGINAL PLATE. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-717 AND AN ACQUISITION # OF NOAA011-GIFT. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING IN THE FOLDS. THIS ONE WAS TAKEN FROM THE 1851 ANNUAL REPORT. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-466 AND AN ACQ. # OF J017-DDT. FINALLY, THE COLLECTION HAS A FULL SCALE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF THIS SKETCH WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-161(REPRO).
