BEST INFO SOURCE : THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS TO
CONGRESS FOR 1849 AND 1850 ARE BEST.
DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY U.S. COAST
SURVEY SKETCH OF THE DEEP SEA SOUNDINGS FOR 15 MILES OF THE COASTS
OF DELAWARE AND MARYLAND WAS DONE AS AN APPENDIX TO ACCOMPANY
THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE
PROGRESS OF THE WORK FOR THE YEAR ENDING NOVEMBER, 1850.
SOUNDINGS ARE IN FEET AND FATHOMS. THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOMS IS
SHOWN AND SHOALS ARE GIVEN BY DOTTED LINES. IT WAS ONE OF 8
SKETCHES PUBLISHED IN THAT REPORT - ALL ON LOCALITIES WHERE DANGERS
TO NAVIGATION OR FACILITIES TO NAVIGATION HAD BEEN FOUND. THE
SKETCHES HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN RELEASED, AS DATA WAS RECEIVED AND
COMPILED, TO INSURANCE OFFICES AND TO AGENTS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION
OF COAST SURVEY CHARTS. APPARENTLY THE WORK ON THE SOUNDINGS HAD
PROCEEDED FROM NORTH TO SOUTH IN THE SKETCH. THE 1849 ANNUAL
REPORT INDICATES THAT WORK ON THE AREA THAT YEAR HAD GONE FROM ISLE
OF WIGHT SHOAL SOUTH. THE 1850 REPORT SHOWS THAT THE WORK
CONTINUED PRIMARILY IN THE MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA SEACOAST TO A
DISTANCE OF 13 MILES SEAWARD.
DATA IS FROM THE 1849 AND 1850 USCS ANNUAL REPORTS TO CONGRESS.
EDITION & STATE INFO : NOT YET RESEARCHED.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS
A COPY OF THIS SKETCH ON THIN PAPER, CLOSE CROPPED ON THE LEFT
BORDER WITH PARTIAL LOSS OF THE NEAT LINE AND THE FIRST DIGITS OF
THE LATITUDE. THERE IS A SEPARATION ON THE CENTERFOLD, WITH MINOR
LOSS OF DATA. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2UI AND A MDHR # OF MSA
SC1399-596.
