DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL SKETCH THAT COVERS
FROM THE MOUTH OF N.Y. HARBOR TO CAPE HATTERAS, INCLUDING THE
MARYLAND PORTION OF THE OCEANFRONT, SHOWS THE LINES WHERE SOUNDINGS
WERE MADE IN THE OCEAN AND THE DATES OF THOSE SOUNDINGS. IT ALSO
IDENTIFIES THE TIDAL STATION NEAR CAPE HATTERAS. THERE IS A LINE
TO MARK TRUE MERIDIAN. THE BULK OF THE SOUNDING WORK IN 1850 WAS
DONE SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY. THIS SKETCH WAS USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE
REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY, SHOWING THE
PROGRESS OF THE WORK FOR THE YEAR ENDING NOVEMBER, 1850.
DATA IS FROM THE 1850 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM
OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS A SIMILAR SKETCH IN THE
1849 ANNUAL REPORT WITH THE TITLE THE SAME EXCEPT FOR "& '50",
WHICH IS MISSING. THE DATA SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY IN THE 1849 VERSION
IS MUCH MORE SKETCHY. IT HAS "PAG. 6." IN THE TOP LEFT AND LACKS
THE NOTE "T SIGNIFIES TIDAL STATION" OF THE 1850 VERSION BELOW THE
SCALE.
