THE MESSAGE OF GOVERNOR PHILIP F. THOMAS, DATED ANNAPOLIS, MD.,
MARCH 7th., 1850, READS AS FOLLOWS:
"TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY:
HENRY G.S. KEY, ESQUIRE, OF SAINT MARY'S COUNTY, WAS APPOINTED BY
ME ON THE 21st OF AUGUST LAST, A COMMISSIONER UNDER RESOLUTION NO.
18 OF DECEMBER SESSION 1845, TO ASCERTAIN AND REFIX, IN CONJUNCTION
WITH JOSHUA P. EYRE, ESQUIRE, A COMMISSIONER APPOINTED ON THE PART
OF PENNSLVANIA, AND GEORGE READ RIDDLE, ESQUIRE, A COMMISSIONER
APPOINTED ON THE PART OF DELAWARE, CERTAIN BOUNDARIES WHERE THE
STATES OF MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA AND DELAWARE JOIN EACH OTHER. THE
COMMISSIONERS HAVE PERFORMED THIS DUTY IN A VERY ABLE AND
SATISFACTORY MANNER, AND THE ACCOMPANYING REPORT AND PAPERS, AND
THE MAP OF THE BOUNDARIES ADJUSTED AND FIXED BY THEM, PREPARED BY
LT. COL. JAMES D. GRAHAM, OF THE U.S. TOPOGRAPHICAL CORP. OF
ENGINEERS, DETAILED BY THE WAR DEPARTMENT FOR THIS PARTICULAR
SERVICE, AT THE REQUEST OF THESE STATES, RESPECTIVELY, WHICH HAVE
JUST BEEN RECEIVED AT THIS DEPARTMENT, ARE HEREWITH TRANSMITTED FOR
SUCH DISPOSITION AS TO THE LEGISLATURE MAY SEEM PROPER.
IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE ON THE MAP THAT CAPE HENLOPEN IS LABELED CAPE CORNELIUS AND CAPE HENLOPEN IS LOCATED WHERE FALSE CAPE WAS IN THE OLD MAPS AS WAS DONE IN THE DECREE OF 1750.
A SECOND EDITION OF THIS MAP WAS DONE AND IS ATTACHED AS THE LAST PAGE TO A DOCUMENT ENTITLED MESSAGES FROM THE GOVERNORS OF MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA, TRANSMITTING THE REPORTS OF THE JOINT COMMISSIONERS AND OF LIEUT. COL. GRAHAM, U.S. TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS, IN RELATION TO THE INTERSECTION OF THE BOUNDARY LINE OF THE STATES OF MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA AND DELAWARE, BEING A PORTION OF THE MASON AND DIXON'S LINE WITH A MAP. SECOND EDITION, CHICAGO: STEAM PRESSES OF F. FULTON & CO. 1862.
DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF BOTH EDITIONS OF THE DOCUMENT AND MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THE MAP.
1ST ED. - (1850) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE WATER AREAS HAVE A FEW PARALLEL LINES CONFORMING TO THE SHORELINES, BUT NOT COMPLETELY COVERING THE WATER AREAS. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY AREA BELOW THE SCALE OF MILES.
2ND ED. - (1862) - THE MAP HAS BEEN COMPLETELY REDRAWN. THE LETTERING IS HEAVIER ON THIS EDITION. UNDER THE SCALE OF MILES IS THE FOLLOWING: "LITH. OF ED. MENDEL CHICAGO 2D. EDITION 1862." IN THE SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY AREA. THE PARALLEL, SHORE CONFORMING LINES IN THE WATER AREAS COVER THE WHOLE AREAS. SEE MAP # 362G5.
