DESCRIPTION : THIS CHART COVERS FROM NEW YORK TO FLORIDA. IT HAS LARGE INSETS OF THE ENTRANCE TO HUDSON RIVER, THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ST. JOHNS RIVER IN FLORIDA. THE CHART AND TWO OF THE INSETS ARE BASED ON WORK PUBLISHED BY EDMUND BLUNT AND THE FLORIDA COAST INSET IS BASED ON A MAP BY CAPTAIN BARNETT. THE MAIN CHART HAS NO DETAILED TOPOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION, ALTHOUGH THE NEW YORK INSET DOES GIVE SOME SUCH DATA. SCATTERED SOUNDINGS FOR 40-50 MILES TO SEA ARE PROVIDED AND THE BOTTOM CONDITIONS ARE OCCASIONALLY NOTED. SOUNDINGS ARE IN FRENCH BRASSES EQUAL TO 1.624 METERS. SHOALS ARE SHOWN DOTTED AND/OR BY SHADING. THE CHART IS ON HEAVY PAPER AND WAS PROBABLY USED FOR COASTAL NAVIGATION BY FRENCH VESSELS.

NO REFERENCES TO THIS MAP HAVE BEEN FOUND. HOWEVER, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY NOTES THAT J.M. HACQ WAS EMPLOYED BY THE DEPARTEMENT DE LA MARINE IN 1850. SINCE THE FLORIDA INSET IS DATED 1846, BUT HAS THE NOTATION "(1849)" IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARGIN, A DATE OF c1850 IS BEING ASSIGNED UNTIL MORE DEFINITIVE DATA CAN BE FOUND.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE TITLE SUGGESTS THAT THE MAIN MAP WAS COPIED FROM A SIMILAR MAP BY EDMUND BLUNT DATED 1828, BUT WE HAVE NOT YET SEEN REFERENCES TO THAT MAP. THE INSET OF THE ENTRANCE TO CHESAPEAKE BAY REFERS TO P. ADAMS, WHO DID WORK FOR THE U.S.C.S.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF THIS CHART WITH SLIGHT BROWNING THROUGHOUT AND A SMALL TEAR ALONG THE CENTERFOLD THAT HAS BEEN REPAIRED. IT HAS FULL MARGINS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C014-UGN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-622.

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : TOOLEY, R.V., DICTIONARY OF MAPMAKERS, TRING, HERTFORDSHIRE: MAP COLLECTOR PUBLICATIONS LTD., 1979, 113, 274.
