DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY FOR THE YEAR ENDING NOVEMBER, 1849. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. AS OF NOVEMBER, 1849, THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION ON THE CHESAPEAKE HAD BEEN EXTENDED SOUTH BEYOND THE RAPPAHANNOCK, IN VIRGINIA. THE SECONDARY, ON THE OUTER COAST, HAD ADVANCED TO ASSATEAGUE LIGHT-HOUSE. THE TERCIARY TRIANGULATION OF THE NANTICOKE HAD BEEN DONE TO VIENNA. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SHORES OF THE NINTICOKE, POCOMOKE, AND WICOMICO, OF HOOPER'S STRAITS, AND OF TANGIER BAY, HAD BEEN COMPLETED DURING THE YEAR. THAT OF THE OCEAN SHORE WAS CARRIED FROM SENEPUXENT BAY TO ASSATEAGUE ISLAND. THE HYDROGRAPHY OUTSIDE HAD BEEN CARRIED SOUTH FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT SHOAL TO THE MOUTH OF GREEN RIVER INLET. IN THE CHESAPEAKE, ACROSS THE MOUTH OF THE POTOMAC TO SMITH'S POINT WAS COMPLETED. THE REPORT URGED THAT A SUITABLE STEAM VESSEL BE PROCURED FOR THE SOUNDING WORK IN ORDER TO FINISH IT MORE EXPEDICIOUSLY. THE SKETCH SHOWS THE TIDAL, ASTRONOMICAL AND MAGNETIC STATIONS AND IT IDENTIFIES THE PLANE TABLES AND THE HYDROGRAPHIC SHEETS (WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT BUT NOT PUBLISHED AND ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC).

DATA IS FROM THE 1849 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY ON LIGHT PAPER WITH SLIGHT BROWNING AT THE FOLDS AND SOME BROWN SPOTS ON THE FACE OF THE SKETCH. THE FOLDS HAVE BEEN STRENGTHENED. A SECOND COPY IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, FOLDED INTO THE USCS 1849 ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AS ISSUED. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B015-DTGQ* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-605 (4).
